Traineeship summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate who has a passion for working with children but is lacking the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to begin working in the childcare sector.  Working with children requires good communication skills, a caring nature and someone who is willing to gain valuable work experience to progress into an apprenticeship.

Childcare area is a varied and flexible career path. They play with children and help them with different duties such as feeding and dressing tasks. People who want to work in this sector have a wide variety of jobs.

You'll work to inspire, excite and nurture children through a crucial stage of their development. Your aim will be to motivate children and use resources imaginatively to help them learn. You'll provide a safe and secure environment for them to develop their social and communication skills, while recording observations and summarising their achievements.

Childcare duties can include:

  • motivate and stimulate a child's learning abilities, often encouraging learning through experience
  • assist with the development of a child's personal, social, language and physical coordination abilities
  • encourage mathematical and creative development through stories, songs, games, drawing and imaginative play
  • help children develop curiosity and knowledge
  • observe, assess and record each child's progress
  • ensure the health and safety of children and staff is maintained during all activities, both inside and outside the nursery or school
  • keep up to date with changes in the curriculum and developments in best practice

Our traineeship programme is designed to develop the candidate's knowledge, skills, and confidence while providing valuable work experience and exclusive access to apprenticeship opportunities. This is a government-funded training programme with no financial commitment required by the candidate, however, candidates will be expected to commit to the full 7 week programme and to follow attendance and behaviour policies as within the workplace.

This Traineeship work experience is part of an education and training programme that is focused on giving young people the skills and experience that employers are looking for. At its core is the Work Preparation training, English and maths for those who need it, and a high quality work experience placement.

Traineeships help unlock your great potential and give you the work preparation training, maths, English, Digital Skills and work experience needed to get an Apprenticeship or other job.

We as a training provider will also support you for up to 12 months after the 7 week course has been completed, if you are unsuccessful at gaining employment should you require additional support. 

Training to be provided

The candidate will complete a 7 week pre-employment training programme which will be a mix of classroom workshops and 100 hours work based experience.

Our course is set to run for 8 weeks but some may finish later (up-to 6 months) depending on the one to one support needed.

The first 4 weeks will be a classroom workshop at our traineeship centre, the candidate will then go out to the work placement for the following 4 weeks.

This is a work experience opportunity that could lead into paid employment. Job offers and apprenticeships are not guaranteed and based on the candidate’s performance while in the work placement.

Things to consider

The first 3 weeks of the course will be based at our traineeship centre Monday to Thursday 9.00am - 3.30pm in Digbeth B9 4AT. Most of the course will now be delivered online. The learner will then attend a 4 week work placement at the named nursery near to your home postcode.

You must:

  • Eligible to work in England
  • Unemployed and have little or no work experience
  • Aged 16 to 24
  • Does not currently hold a level 4 qualification in any subject
  • Not currently enrolled with another college or training provider
  • Willing to travel up to 45 minutes for the work placement
  • Available full for the 7 weeks Monday - Friday between 9.00am- 3.30pm
  • Has required ID such as in date passport, driving license or birth certificate
  • Has proof of current address
  • Has a National Insurance number
  • No criminal record- clear from cautions or convictions
