What you'll do at work

As a Data & Operations Technician Apprentice, you will support the day-to-day operations of the business across order fulfilment and logistics functions. You will work with customer, operational and logistics data to ensure records are accurate, orders are processed efficiently and customers receive excellent service.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop practical data skills while gaining experience in a busy operational environment. You will learn how business data is captured, maintained and used to support decision-making, customer service and operational performance.

Duties will include:

  • Processing incoming customer orders and equipment.
  • Entering, maintaining and validating customer and operational data within company systems.
  • Booking customer equipment onto company databases and management systems.
  • Maintaining accurate customer records and ensuring data quality standards are met.
  • Monitoring data for discrepancies and supporting corrective actions where required.
  • Using business systems to track customer orders and equipment throughout the process.
  • Supporting the management of customer orders from receipt through to dispatch.
  • Assisting with customer enquiries and providing a high level of customer service.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across logistics, laboratory and sales teams.
  • Receiving, checking and processing customer equipment.
    Supporting shipping and dispatch activities.
  • Assisting with import and export administration and customs documentation.
  • Liaising with logistics providers regarding collections and deliveries.
    Supporting purchasing and procurement administration.
  • Maintaining operational records, documentation and compliance information.
  • Supporting health and safety and facilities administration activities.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement projects and process efficiencies.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Select and migrate data from already identified sources.
  • Format and save datasets.
  • Summarise, analyse and explain gathered data.
  • Combine data sets from multiple sources and present in format appropriate to the task.
  • Use tools and/or apply basic statistical methods to identify trends and patterns in data.
  • Identify faults and cleanse data to improve data quality, for example identifying gaps, duplicate entries, outliers and unusual variances, including cross-checking across data elements or between data sources.
  • Audit data results for maintenance of data quality, reviewing a data set once all sources are combined, to ensure accuracy, completeness, consistency and traceability from original data.
  • Demonstrate the different ways of communicating meaning from data in line with audience requirements.
  • Produce clear and consistent documentation of the data provided to others and of actions completed. Where appropriate or mandated by the working context, this documentation should use standard organisational templates.
  • Store, manage and distribute data in compliance with organisational, national, sector specific standards and or legislation.
  • Considers sustainability and ways to reduce impact. For example, using cloud storage, sharing links to files, avoid storing multiple versions of files, and reducing the use of physical handouts of documentation.
  • Parse data against standard formats, and test and assess confidence in the data and its integrity.
  • Operate collaboratively in a working context that accounts for, and takes advantage of, the roles, skills and activities of others, especially those interacting with the same data sets or working towards a common goal.
  • Prioritise own activities within the context of the duties to be performed, taking account of any known or expected impact on others.
  • Follows equity, diversity and inclusion policies in the organisation for a common goal.

Training schedule

Training will be delivered through a combination of workplace learning and regular online sessions with The S&A Academy. The apprentice will receive dedicated support from an experienced trainer throughout the programme and will be given off-the-job training time to complete apprenticeship activities, assignments and projects. Training sessions will typically take place remotely, alongside practical learning within the workplace, allowing the apprentice to apply their knowledge and skills directly to their role.

More training information

Training will be delivered by The S&A Academy, an experienced apprenticeship training provider. The programme will be structured around regular training sessions, progress reviews and workplace-based learning, ensuring the apprentice receives ongoing support throughout their apprenticeship. Dedicated off-the-job training time will be provided, with learning activities scheduled around business needs to support the successful completion of the programme and achievement of the apprenticeship standard.
