What you will do in your working day

Job Description and Main Duties:

  • Marking out and cutting leather
  • Sewing leather and other fabrics
  • Hand stitching leather using cord
  • Hole punching leather inserting eyelets
  • Construction of the basket floor - pattern making, cutting wood, shaping to fit basket
  • Use of jig saw, band saw, sander
  • Varnishing/oiling wood
  • Fitting of internal pads
  • Cutting of foam
  • Sewing pole covers, inserting zips, making straps, etc.
  • Use of hand and machine tools
  • Working inside of the basket to fit internal elements.
  • Lifting, carrying of heavy fabric and parts
  • Going off site to help with balloon inflations

The training you will be getting

A variety of in-house incremental hands-on, practical training with a dedicated supervisor mentor.

All college training will take place within the workplace with a dedicated Assessor visiting on a regular basis to carry out reviews, observations and set coursework targets.

You will work towards the L2 Leather Craftsperson Standard.

You will have an e-portfolio for submitting your work and you must log your off the job training on a daily basis.

Things to consider

Candidates should have experience / be comfortable with using a variety of hand and powered work tools. Candidates should be ready to show photos at interview of stages of a variety of home / school projects that they have made or been a part of making e.g., bookcases, window-boxes, decking, room decoration, curtain-making, upholstery, mending items, up-cycling items, house building work etc. Candidates should have done some consistent and regular paid or unpaid work and be work ready. Own transport or means to get to and from work. (Central location / lots of buses stop on East Street in Bedminster and from there it is a short walk / bicycle racks are available inside the factory for staff to store their bicycle during the working day)
