Before you start the apprenticeship you will be on £10.00 an hour. The first day of your apprenticeship your rate will increase to £12.05. You will then receive quarterly pay increase.

17 years old - Monday to Friday 07:30 to 15:30 - 40 hours inclusive of an hour break each day. 18 years old+ - Monday to Friday 07:30 to 17:30 - 45 hours not including up to an hour break each day.

What you will do in your working day
As an Apprentice Steel Fixer, you will learn to assemble and erect the steel components required to strengthen reinforced concrete structures, such as bridges, culverts, railway stations, power stations, etc.
- Setting out the work area, following engineering plans
- Using hand and power tools to cut and bend bars or mesh
- Tying steel reinforcement bars (rebars) to build cages
Typically, you will work within a larger team on construction projects, and, in the fullness of time, you will be able to interpret contract information, drawings and specifications, in order to assemble and install the components correctly.
The training you will be getting
Level 2 Steel Fixer Apprenticeship Standard:
- NVQ Level 2 in Steel Fixing
The successful applicant will be enrolled in the Bridgwater & Taunton College Steel fixing apprenticeship. The apprenticeship start date is the end of September 2024, this standard is delivered via block release.
You will work on one of our 'live' projects and receive training from a recognised provider either one day a week or on a block release.
Functional skills in maths and English (if required).
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
Once you have achieved the Level 2 qualification you will have the opportunity to progress on to the next level. Ultimately, and depending on the individual, you could advance to a supervisory or management role within the construction industry.
