Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Analytical Research & Development (ARD) plays a vital role in the development of new medicines by providing a wide range of analytical testing to support the development, manufacture and release of materials used in clinical trials. Our scientists generate and interpret large volumes of complex data that are critical to ensuring the quality, safety and effectiveness of medicines. Supporting this work is a growing team of data science and digital specialists who develop innovative ways to manage, connect and analyse scientific data, helping to transform information into knowledge and accelerate research and development.
This apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of data, technology and science. You will gain hands-on experience supporting projects that improve how scientific data is captured, managed and utilised across a global pharmaceutical organisation. Working with scientists and business stakeholders, you will help develop digital solutions that improve efficiency, enhance data accessibility and support better decision-making.
You will be exposed to a range of analytics and visualisation tools including Dataiku, Spotfire and Python-based data science toolkits, alongside industry-leading laboratory and analytics platforms, including BIOVIA OneLab, Empower, LabWare LIMS, and OpenLab.
The role will provide experience in data management, analytics, automation and business analysis, while also offering opportunities to explore emerging applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning within scientific and operational environments.
A key focus of the team is helping scientists digitise and standardise their workflows, ensuring data can be efficiently collected, analysed and reused. This provides an opportunity to gain experience understanding business processes, identifying improvement opportunities and translating user needs into practical data-driven solutions.
As part of a collaborative and fast-paced environment, you will be encouraged to contribute ideas, take ownership of your development and communicate your work to both technical and non-technical audiences. You will work with colleagues across the UK, United States, Ireland, India and other global locations, developing both technical expertise and professional skills within an international organisation.
This apprenticeship provides an excellent foundation for a career in data science, analytics, informatics or digital technology, combining real-world experience, modern technologies and the opportunity to contribute to work that supports the development of medicines that improve patients' lives worldwide.
Job Responsibilities
Main Duties include:
- Provide data science support as ARD Digital Transformation team partners with GMP-Analytics, Drug Substance (API) and Drug Product (DPA), and Degradation Science and Structural Elucidation (DSSE) teams to digitise laboratory workflows.
- Partner with Data Science teams in partnering lines to make best use of their expertise in enterprise platform systems, and look for opportunities to apply their technology implementations in ARD.
- Develop a good understanding of how ARD interacts with the wider PSSM environment.
- Assist to frame, investigate, translate complex data related models, and answer key business questions related to the identification and evaluation of scientific dataflows and datasets.
- Assist in the creation of dashboards, reports, visualisations and analytical tools that support decision-making and generate insights from scientific and operational data.
- Communicate project progress, findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Identify and clarify problems an organisation faces, and reformulate them into Data Science problems. Devise solutions and make decisions in context by seeking feedback from stakeholders. Apply scientific methods through experiment design, measurement, hypothesis testing and delivery of results. Collaborate with colleagues to gather requirements.
- Perform data engineering: create and handle datasets for analysis. Use tools and techniques to source, access, explore, profile, pipeline, combine, transform and store data, and apply governance (quality control, security, privacy) to data.
- Identify and use an appropriate range of programming languages and tools for data manipulation, analysis, visualisation, and system integration. Select appropriate data structures and algorithms for the problem. Develop reproducible analysis and robust code, working in accordance with software development standards, including security, accessibility, code quality and version control.
- Use analysis and models to inform and improve organisational outcomes, building models and validating results with statistical testing: perform statistical analysis, correlation vs causation, feature selection and engineering, machine learning, optimisation, and simulations, using the appropriate techniques for the problem.
- Implement data solutions, using relevant software engineering architectures and design patterns. Evaluate Cloud vs. on-premise deployment. Determine the implicit and explicit value of data. Assess value for money and Return on Investment. Scale a system up/out. Evaluate emerging trends and new approaches. Compare the pros and cons of software applications and techniques.
- Find, present, communicate and disseminate outputs effectively and with high impact through creative storytelling, tailoring the message for the audience. Use the best medium for each audience, such as technical writing, reporting and dashboards. Visualise data to tell compelling and actionable narratives. Make recommendations to decision makers to contribute towards the achievement of organisation goals.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships at strategic and operational levels, using methods of organisational empathy (human, organisation and technical) and build relationships through active listening and trust development.
- Use project delivery techniques and tools appropriate to their Data Science project and organisation. Plan, organise and manage resources to successfully run a small Data Science project, achieve organisational goals and enable effective change.
