Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Across your 18 months, you'll spend time embedded in the teams below. Each one plays a different part in getting Bauer's radio stations, podcasts and apps in front of listeners, and each one will teach you a different set of skills.
Platform Team:
The engine room of Bauer's audio estate. This central team builds and maintains the backend platforms and services that power every Bauer radio station listened to on a digital or connected device, apps, smart speakers, you name it. It's a remote-first team, so if you've ever wondered what's happening behind an app or a stream, this is where you'd find out.
Web, Voice & Connected Devices Team:
This team builds the customer-facing side of things for web, voice assistants and connected devices / speakers, using technologies like TypeScript, React and Next.js. They take what the Platform team builds and turn it into the products people use and see on screen.
Mobile Team:
The team behind Bauer's highly rated mobile apps for Android (Kotlin) and iOS / Apple (SwiftUI), often the most visible part of the whole operation, since it's the bit sitting on listeners' phones. As the team will tell you themselves, mobile only works because of everything the other teams build underneath it.
Cloud & Infrastructure Team:
This team provides cloud environments (predominantly AWS) and infrastructure-as-code (using tools like Terraform and GitHub Actions) that let every other engineering team do their job, and they automate as much of that as possible so everyone else can move faster.
Architecture Team:
Where most teams focus on how to build something, Architecture focuses on why. This team thinks about early engagement, discovery, and the bigger-picture decisions, including knowing when the answer is 'no'. A great team for understanding the reasoning behind the technology choices Bauer makes.
Quality Assurance (QA) Team:
QA is embedded across every team above and sits between the customer and the rest of engineering, the final check before anything goes live. QA takes a description of what's being built, imagines every way it could go right or wrong, and turns that into tests that make sure listeners get a product that works.
This is a technical apprenticeship, so we do need a genuine interest in IT or technology, you'll be learning real, technical skills (like cloud infrastructure or coding languages) that go beyond what you'd pick up at school, college or university. But we are not looking for finished experts. We're looking for the right mindset, and we'll teach you the rest.
