Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
This is a varied role supporting the development of new products and packaging for food for special medical purposes (FSMP nutritional products) and medical devices. The role will work closely with the Commercial team and will involve working with product samples, packaging components, artwork and external suppliers.
Importantly, this is not a traditional graphic design role. While creativity and strong design skills are valuable, the primary focus of the role is on accuracy, technical artwork, regulatory compliance and attention to detail.
Packaging design within our industry requires a high level of precision and an understanding that artwork must meet specific regulatory and commercial requirements. This includes working with technical information, strict typography requirements, over-labelling and multi-language packaging, where even small errors can have significant implications.
The successful candidate will therefore need to be organised, methodical and comfortable working within defined guidelines, while also having the ability to apply their design skills appropriately.
Key Responsibilities:
Packaging & Artwork:
- Support the Commercial team with new product development and packaging projects
- Assist with the creation and amendment of packaging artwork using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign
- Prepare and amend artwork in accordance with approved specifications and requirements
- Assist with packaging layouts, technical artwork and product labelling
- Support over-labelling and artwork amendments where required
- Assist with multi-language artwork and packaging adjustments, ensuring information is accurately positioned and presented
- Check artwork carefully for accuracy, consistency and compliance with supplied information
- Maintain a high level of attention to detail when working with product names, ingredients, technical information, warnings, regulatory statements and other packaging content
- Work with samples and packaging components as part of the product development process
- Make amendments based on feedback from the Commercial team and other relevant stakeholders
- Maintain appropriate records and versions of artwork and supporting documentation
Product Development Support:
- Work closely with members of the Commercial team on new product development projects
- Assist with preparing and organising product and packaging samples
- Help coordinate artwork and packaging requirements with relevant internal teams and external suppliers
- Assist with obtaining information, quotations and samples from external suppliers
- Monitor the progress of packaging and product development activities and ensure actions are followed up
Packaging & Stock Administration:
- Maintain databases and trackers to monitor applications, artwork and project progress
- Monitor packaging components and artwork-related materials to help ensure sufficient stock levels are maintained
- Maintain accurate records of packaging components and supplier information
- Assist with general office-based administration associated with product development and packaging projects
Commercial & General Support:
The role will also require a flexible and adaptable approach to support the wider Commercial team where required.
This may include:
- Preparing and sending letters, documents and product samples to Trademark owners and other external contacts
- Assisting with ad-hoc administrative requests
- Supporting the preparation of occasional marketing materials
- Providing general administrative support to the Commercial team
- Cross company support as required
