Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Helping to prepare and feed children simple meals and drinks (the cook prepares hot meals).
  • Changing nappies or helping with potty/toilet training.
  • Teaching general life skills, such as basic hygiene and manners. 
  • Helping to get the children safely access nature play at our house or in local green spaces. 
  • Closely supervising children during activities and ensuring the environment is safe. 
  • Developing positive relationships with children, parents, other staff, and members of the household to ensure children and parents feel happy and comfortable with the provision. 
  • Planning and delivering stimulating activities to enable the children to develop in all the EYFS key areas. 
  • Tidying away resources and cleaning up after meals in line with health and safety and food hygiene requirements. 
  • Helping to track and record the children’s development and experiences using an online software programme. 
  • Be familiar with all the policies and procedures such as safeguarding, data protection and emergency evacuation procedures and ensure they are adhered to. 
  • Be familiar with Ofsted requirements and how to ensure they are met (training provided).

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
  • Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
  • Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
  • Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
  • Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
  • Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
  • Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.
  • Provide sensitive and respectful personal care for children from birth to 5 years.
  • Advocate for all children’s needs, including children which require SEND or EAL support.
  • Promote and facilitate children’s interpersonal communication to develop their social interactions and relationships.
  • Support children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture.
  • Support children to understand and respond to their emotions and make considered choices about their behaviours.

About this employer

We are a warm, home-from-home early years setting in leafy East Dulwich, caring for children aged 10 months to 4 years in a calm, family-focused environment. We are a bilingual Spanish setting with a diverse team and care for a maximum of 24 children each day, allowing us to build strong relationships with children and families. We are passionate about child-led learning and creativity and are currently working towards Curiosity Approach accreditation. Staff wellbeing is a key priority, with minimal unnecessary paperwork, flexible working and plenty of training and apprenticeship opportunities. We pride ourselves on being a supportive, inclusive, and friendly place to work, with excellent relationships across our team and wider nursery community.
