Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Support civil engineering projects by creating and modifying engineering drawings, documents and specifications
- Assist with engineering calculations, technical sketches, plans and reports
- Collect, analyse and interpret engineering data to support design development
- Support the use of digital engineering software and tools including CAD, BIM and Revit
- Assist engineers and technicians with project design and delivery activities
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, engineering standards and environmental requirements
- Support the implementation of health and safety procedures and site safety requirements
- Assist in identifying risks and developing solutions to engineering challenges
- Communicate effectively with project teams, clients and stakeholders
- Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
- Maintain accurate project records and documentation
- Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and professional behaviours in the workplace

- Apply engineering principles, using relevant scientific, theoretical and technical know-how to solve well-defined civil engineering problems
- Apply civil engineering techniques, procedures and methods, and review the results, when measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining or operating civil engineering systems
- Employ a range of advanced mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods to interpret and solve civil engineering problems
- Interpret and compare performance information to choose compliant materials, components or parts
- Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address well-defined civil engineering problems
- Produce and interpret civil engineering technical drawings, designs, and models, using analytical and computer-based software packages, recognising the limitations of the software used
- Produce civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, procedures, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation
- Comply with, and encourage others to demonstrate, statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures and regulation
- Complete risk assessments to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks
- Apply principles of sustainable development, and assess the impact of these in their work
- Employ project management techniques, measuring and recording progress against civil engineering project plans
- Assess and report on quality using appropriate management and assurance systems and continuous improvement processes

Training schedule
The apprentice will be enrolled on the Level 4 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship delivered by London South Bank University (LSBU).
Training location: London South Bank University, 103 Borough Road, London, SE1 0AA, alongside workplace learning at Robert Bird Group's London office.
Training schedule: Training will typically be delivered on a day-release basis, with the apprentice attending university during term time and working within the business for the remainder of the week.
Duration: The programme is delivered over 36 months (3 years) and combines academic study with practical workplace experience on live engineering projects.
Off-the-job training: The apprentice will receive protected study time in line with apprenticeship requirements, including lectures, coursework, project work, mentoring and professional development activities.

- Progression to Senior Civil Engineering Technician roles with increased technical and project responsibilities
- Professional development towards Engineering Technician (EngTech) status through the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
- Progression onto a Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship (BEng), leading towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level professional development
