Summary

Join Housewarmers as an Apprentice Gas Engineer and learn domestic gas, heating and plumbing work with our experienced engineers. You’ll attend Ignite Training one day a week, gain hands on experience in customers’ homes, and build the skills for a long term trade career.

• Wage:

  £16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

  As the apprentice gains skills, confidence and contributes more on site, pay will be reviewed. We recognise hard work and progress, and any pay increase or performance bonus will be at the company’s discretion.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

• Assist qualified engineers with domestic gas, heating and plumbing work
• Help prepare tools, materials and work areas for each job
• Travel to customer homes with the supervising engineer
• Observe and assist with boiler, fire, cooker, water heater and heating system work
• Help with pipework, radiators, hot and cold water systems and general plumbing tasks
• Learn how to follow manufacturer instructions and job paperwork
• Keep work areas clean, tidy and safe
• Speak politely and professionally with customers
• Follow health and safety procedures and wear required PPE
• Attend Ignite Training one day per week and complete apprenticeship training as required, including filling in individual job tracker
• Ask questions, take feedback and build practical skills under supervision

What you'll learn

Course contents

• Comply with health and safety practices.
• Install and commission a range of primary appliances, for example central heating boilers, gas cookers, space heaters.
• Install and commission a range of secondary appliances, for example laundry appliances, water heaters and gas meters (not exceeding 6m3 in capacity).
• Carry out testing and safety checks applicable to the appliance chimney or flue type.
• Carry out routine maintenance and servicing of appliances and components.
• Identify and rectify faults in appliances and components.
• Decommission appliances and systems.
• Isolate the electrical supply to the appliance.
• Conduct electrical safety checks pre- and post-work.
• Undertake and document risk assessments.
• Source, read and follow technical documentation associated with equipment and installation requirements.
• Select, use and maintain tools, equipment and test instrumentation.
• Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Check and action inspection records and schedules.
• Identify unsafe situations or conditions and take action under IGEM G/11 Gas industry unsafe situations procedure.
• Use digital technology to access job, appliance and customer information.
• Complete and maintain work records including appliance and customer data in accordance with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
• Communicate verbally with customers, including the provision of guidance on energy and efficiency measures specific to the appliance or system being worked on.
• Recycle, reuse, return defective components and dispose of waste.
• Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.
• Apply equity, diversity and inclusion procedures.

Training schedule

The apprentice will receive practical training at work with Housewarmers, working alongside qualified engineers on domestic gas, heating and plumbing jobs. They will also attend Ignite Training Ltd one day per week, expected to be Thursdays, at Ignite Training, 5 Larch Court, Elm Road, West Chirton North Industrial Estate, North Shields, NE29 8SG.

More training information

The formal training plan will be agreed between Housewarmers, Ignite Training Ltd and the apprentice before the apprenticeship starts. Progress will be reviewed regularly, with support from Housewarmers and Ignite to help the apprentice stay on track, build their evidence and prepare for assessments.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

• English (grade Grade 4/C or equivalent)
• Mathematics (grade Grade 4/C or equivalent)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

Applicants must be comfortable working in customers’ homes and speaking politely with customers. The role involves practical site work, including working at height, working in confined or awkward spaces, lifting and carrying materials, kneeling, using tools and wearing PPE. Applicants must be able to get to our Sunderland shop for the start of the working day and to the training centre on their training day.

Housewarmers is a family run plumbing, heating and bathroom company based at our showroom in Sunderland. We work in customers’ homes across Sunderland, South Shields, Durham and the surrounding areas, carrying out boiler, gas, heating, plumbing, bathroom, stove and fireplace work. We are a small, practical team with a focus on reliable service, good workmanship and helping customers feel comfortable in their homes.

After this apprenticeship

After completing the apprenticeship, the aim would be for the apprentice to progress into a qualified domestic gas engineer role, carrying out plumbing, heating, boiler and gas appliance work.
