Summary
As a Support Worker, you will help to improve the lives of the adults we support by promoting, understanding and acceptance of people with autism and helping them to be included and feel valued. You will be committed to maximising personal liberties and enabling people to make choices and decisions about their own lives.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
To ensure the highest standards of support are provided to the people who are supported by Leeds Autism Services, you will work within local and national guidelines and always strive to provide the best experience for our service users.
Supporting service users:
- Ensure the welfare and development of all service users by providing the highest standards of care and making sure that appropriate attention is paid to their spiritual, physical, cultural, social, educational, and recreational needs, in accordance with service user plans
- Promote and implement inclusive, person centred care planning practices
- Support service users to plan their support; identify and achieve personal goals and/or outcomes in accordance with agreed plans
- Support service users in a non-judgemental manner in-keeping with the principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
- Support service users to access activities which have been identified to help people achieve their goals and outcomes
- Facilitate communication in-keeping with individuals’ preferred methods of communicating
- Help service users to develop records of their achievements and goals in a format which is right for them
- Promote personal liberty, choice, inclusion and decision making within the legal framework of the Mental Capacity
- Complete all appropriate recording formats including health and safety records, service user records, medication, etc.
- Ensure the safe administration and storage of medication in line with LAS policies and procedures
- Recognise changes with regards to physical, social and emotional well-being and bring these to the attention of your line manager
- Maintain professional boundaries at all times

- Adhere to legislation and company policies and procedures in relation to confidentiality, data protection, safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion
- Comply with internal policies and procedures on the use of company and service user monies/finance
- Ensure a clean, tidy and hygienic environment is maintained by all staff and service users
- Promote a positive image of people with autism, and the organisation at all times
- Ensure that your conduct, inside and outside of your working environment, does not conflict with the professional expectations of the organisation

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Apply national standards, organisational policies and procedures, codes of conduct and ways of working that apply to own role.
- Follow national legislation, policies and guidance in adult social care settings, relating to health and safety within the scope of own role.
- Consider the human rights of individuals in adult social care settings, in line with organisational policies relating to equity, diversity and inclusion to support an open culture.
- Demonstrate a duty of candour, and duty of care acting in the best interest of individuals to ensure they do not come to harm.
- Apply a person-centred, co-produced approach when developing relationships with individuals to support their health and wellbeing.
- Assist with conducting risk assessments, which focus on positive risk taking, to ensure the safety of yourself and others.
- Apply the principles of positive and proactive care and support for those with lived experience to proactively avoid or reduce escalation, de-escalate, and manage conflict.
- Customise information, advice and guidance to individuals with or without capacity or their representative to make informed, independent choices and decisions.
- Adapt approach to care and support for individuals with lived experience to meet their current and evolving cognitive and physical needs and conditions.
- Recognise and respect how an individuals capacity determines their ability to make informed decisions about their needs.
- Identify and respond to signs and symptoms of changes in the physical and mental capacity, mental health and wellbeing of those with lived experience, and monitor, record and report changes.
- Use appropriate communication methods that are adapted to respond to the needs of individuals, stakeholders and family members in adult social care settings, including verbal, written, non-verbal and digital communication.
- Develop personal resilience and access support to maintain wellbeing of self.
- Use record keeping systems to maintain clear and accurate records of interactions with individuals, and others ensuring security of information and data.
- Apply methods of digital working and communication and new care technologies to support improvements in own work setting.
- Record learning opportunities in line with organisational policies that support lifelong learning and meet the relevant standards.
- Record, use feedback and supervision to improve own practice to identify and support the development of individual goals and career opportunities.
- Contribute and agree to the personal development plan demonstrating support required for new learning goals and reflection on actual practice.
- Monitors safe and effective administration of medicines in accordance with national and organisational policies and the limitations of own role.

Training schedule
Adult Care Worker Level 2.
An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

- Must have the ability to empathise and advocate for the needs of people with autism and/or learning disabilities and adapt to new situations easily
- A positive and flexible attitude to work and working hours as you may at times be called at short notice for shifts
- You must have tact, diplomacy, empathy and be able to care for and support the needs of people with autism and/or learning disabilities
- Be patient with people who have autism and/or learning disabilities with a commitment to equality and diversity
