Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Main Roles and Responsibilities:
Mechanical workshop and practical skills:
- Learn and apply practical workshop skills including measuring, marking out, filing, deburring, sawing, drilling, tapping, reaming and fitting under appropriate supervision.
- Work with a range of engineering materials, including metals and engineering plastics, using suitable tools, techniques and safe working practices.
- Support basic machining and manufacturing activities, including supervised use of workshop equipment and processes as appropriate to your training stage.
- Maintain a tidy, safe and organised working environment, following workshop procedures and company standards.
Mechanical assembly, Build and project support:
- Assist with the mechanical assembly and build of bespoke machinery, automated equipment and mechanical aids under supervision.
- Learn to interpret engineering drawings, parts lists, build documentation and project information.
- Support fitting, adjustment, inspection and checking activities to help ensure machinery is built accurately and to the required quality.
- Work with colleagues across mechanical, electrical and controls disciplines to understand how complete machines are designed, built, tested and delivered.
Learning & development:
- Complete apprenticeship coursework to a high standard.
- Achieve a high level of attendance with day release/off-site study.
- Build an understanding of company standards and safe working practices.
Communication:
- Work collaboratively with all colleagues to support machine builds.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and managers (e.g. progress reports and skill sharing).
- Contribute positively to a professional working environment.
Flexibility and additional responsibilities:
- Manage workload effectively in a fast-moving engineering environment with competing and changing priorities.
- Adapt priorities to meet business or client needs at short notice.
- Provide ad hoc support and practical input where aligned with the general responsibilities of the role.
- Undertake additional duties or small projects as your skills and confidence develop.

- Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
- Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
- Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
- Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
- Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
- Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
- Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
- Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
- Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
- Reporting work outcomes or issues.
- Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
- Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
- Operating within limits of responsibility.
- Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Training schedule
- The learner will be studying the Engineering Fitter Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard qualification.
- Day release to West Suffolk College.
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade 5)
- Maths (grade 5)
