Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

As an Apprentice Design Engineer, you will work alongside the experienced design team and gain practical experience across the design and development of fire sprinkler systems.

You will support the design team on live projects while developing your knowledge of design software, engineering principles, technical documentation and relevant industry standards.

Your duties will include:

Supporting the design team with the preparation and development of fire sprinkler system designs
Assisting with the production and updating of technical drawings
Supporting design calculations and technical documentation
Learning to use industry-standard design software
Assisting with the interpretation of drawings, specifications and technical information
Supporting the design team throughout the project lifecycle
Working alongside internal teams and external stakeholders where required
Maintaining accurate design records and documentation
Developing an understanding of engineering principles, industry standards and fire protection systems
Supporting the team with general design and engineering administration
Contributing to live projects while developing your technical knowledge and skills

Training schedule

The successful candidate will work towards the Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship Standard.

Training will be delivered through Rochdale Training Association, with the apprentice receiving support from both their training provider and A&F Sprinklers throughout the apprenticeship.

The apprentice will develop knowledge, skills and behaviours in areas including:

Engineering principles and practices
Engineering drawings and technical documentation
Engineering materials and processes
Health and safety
Quality standards
Workplace communication
Professional workplace behaviours

Requirements

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)
