Summary

Gain hands-on experience in Building Surveying while studying towards a level 3 apprenticeship. Work alongside experienced professionals supporting subsidence claims, develop practical field skills, and build a career with clear progression opportunities into specialist surveying roles.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Attending site inspections and supporting the identification and reporting of additional or emerging damage at any stage of the claim
  • Assisting with the arrangement and installation of ad hoc crack monitoring where required
  • Attending site investigations to capture key factual information, including internal evidence (e.g. rotten timbers) and other relevant site conditions
  • Supporting quality control checks and progress reviews of ongoing repair works
  • Attending site meetings to review works completed, discuss next steps and assist in developing snagging lists

Undertaking site inspections to verify specific elements such as:

  • Completion of tree works
  • Location of site-specific features
  • Dimensional checks and basic measurements

As experience and competence develop, responsibilities may extend to:

  • Joint repair scheduling visits
  • Assisting in overseeing appropriately sized repair works
  • Supporting the assessment and diagnosis of additional or previously unseen damage identified during the course of a claim

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Measure and collect data relevant to the surveying discipline
  • Demonstrate the application of health and safety issues and the requirements for compliance
  • Apply the principles of construction technology and the environmental performance of materials
  • Apply the principles of contract law to include either contracts for acquisition/disposal of property, standard forms of building contracts or other property related contracts
  • Manage own time and tasks, communicate and negotiate effectively
  • Undertake capital and rental valuations and demonstrate involvement with the preparation of client reports.  Use a variety of valuation methods and techniques and use the relevant valuation standards and guidance
  • Undertake surveys, using survey and other information to diagnose cause and mechanisms of failure
  • Apply the law and practice relating to at least two of land, property, landlord and tenant or planning
  • Implement procurement routes selected for projects and carrying out tendering processes relevant to them
  • Quantification, costing and cost management of construction works, including the use of appropriate standard methods of measurement and forms of cost analysis.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)
