Summary

The Apprentice Quantity Surveyor will support the commercial delivery of projects while gaining practical experience and developing their surveying skills.

The apprentice will assist with cost records, subcontractor information, valuations, procurement activities, measurements, and commercial reporting.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Support the commercial team with day-to-day Quantity Surveying duties under supervision.
  • Assist with maintaining project records, including drawings, variations, RFIs, subcontractor details, and payment information.
  • Support measurements, valuations, cost tracking, procurement activities, and commercial reporting.
  • Assist with subcontractor enquiries, payment applications, and tender comparisons.
  • Attend site visits and meetings to develop an understanding of project delivery and commercial processes.
  • Liaise with site teams, subcontractors, and internal departments to gather required information.
  • Develop knowledge of contracts, cost control, procurement, and final accounts through training, mentoring, and practical experience.
  • Work towards progression into an Assistant Quantity Surveyor role.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Health and Safety: Apply health and safety issues to all activities.
  • Sustainability: Demonstrate application of the principles of sustainability.
  • Construction Technology: Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects
  • Contracts: Be able to apply different types of contracts to different situations.
  • Procurement: Assist in the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
  • Cost control: Assist in the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
  • Financial reporting: Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
  • Administration: Assist in the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.

Training schedule

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.
