Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

As a Trainee Project Manager, you will:

  • Support the successful delivery of infrastructure projects
  • Assist with project planning and scheduling activities
  • Help maintain project records and documentation
  • Support the preparation of reports and project updates
  • Assist with reviewing Health & Safety documentation
  • Learn how to produce and review risk assessments and method statements
  • Work with site teams, suppliers and subcontractors
  • Attend project meetings and contribute to planning discussions
  • Build positive relationships with customers, residents and other stakeholders
  • Develop an understanding of resource management, budgeting and project controls

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Be able to set and review objectives, identify resources and their limitations and plan activities and work methods to ensure project completion on time.
  • Be able to identify and manage risks of health, safety and welfare in line with legislation, hazards and safe systems of work.
  • Be able to identify the standards required by clients and other stakeholders and implement effective procedures for managing, recording and improving quality.
  • Be able to manage construction activities in a way that contributes to sustainable development and implements best practice.
  • Be able to manage legal and contractual matters relating to the site and work within commercial and legal constraints to ensure effective project outcomes.
  • Be able to investigate problems, causes and effects and determine solutions.
  • Be able to identify, obtain and process information required to manage projects.
  • Be able to manage risk and plan for its mitigation to minimise its impact.
  • Be able to manage and appraise team members and specialist contractors, build teams, advise on development and resolve conflicts to ensure effective teamwork.
  • Be able to identify areas for improvement, and implement innovative solutions.
  • Be able to effectively manage and supervise specialist contractors and operatives during the construction phase.
  • Be able to identify and rectify common defects in construction activities.

About this employer

We provide the end-to-end solution for bridge deck maintenance and protection from supply and installation of bridge expansion joints and bridge deck waterproofing membranes to concrete repairs and structural protection systems.

Whether in Highways or Commercial applications, Route One is able to provide a complete end-to-end solution from initial design to completion and testing which ensures the correct application of the correct systems for our customers.

Our key services include Bridge and Structures waterproofing and expansions joints, primarily for the highways, although we do undertake special projects across many other sections such as Marine and Utilities.
