Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Through a combination of work and off-job experience, to become a qualified specialist employee, developing those technical and personal skills that will equip the job holder to develop a successful career. This role is ideally suited to individuals who are passionate about motor vehicles and wish to train within a hands-on role.

  • Detect and diagnose vehicle faults including simple electrical faults
  • Remove and fit non-structural body panels
  • To be aware of and adhere to all the Housekeeping and Health and Safety regulations and policies applicable to your position and working environment
  • Remove and re-install mechanical, electrical and trim components
  • Carry out cosmetic panel alignment
  • Remove, refit and test cooling system components
  • To undertake supervised development of job skills and to put into practice the technical knowledge acquired
  • To undertake such other appropriate tasks as may from time to time be required
  • Must make consistent progress in skill development
  • Must make consistent progress in the development of the inter-personal necessary to ensure transition from education into work
  • Adhere to all company processes and standard operating procedures
  • To apply right first time approach for repairs
  • To maintain level of efficiency commensurate with this discipline
  • To ensure all repairs have been finished in compliance with BS10125
  • To ensure that vehicles comply with safety standards when returned to customers, or that faults have been reported and noted on job card
  • Ensure that all jobs are completed to pre-accident condition in accordance with the approved Repair Methodology and Manufacturers Standards within the estimated times and to the highest standard of quality
  • Interpersonal and communication skills should be excellent standard

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Ability to undertake appropriate job preparation prior to commencing repair, e.g. disarming airbags, undertaking electrical safety precautions and conducting pre-repair diagnostics sweeps.
  • Ability to interpret relevant technical data, specification and methods will enable appropriate pre-preparation prior to work being carried out.
  • Ability to remove, repair and replace Engine, gearbox, suspension, mechanical and electrical systems, related autonomous items from the vehicle safely, e.g. Anti-lock Braking System units, safety restraint systems, Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) & Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) semi-autonomous components.
  • Ability to diagnose and fix faults within a vehicle management system (on board computer) & associated electrical system.
  • Ability to identify and communicate supplementary parts where required.
  • Ability to identify and operate the correct repair tools, equipment and devices used in the process such as Geometry Wheel Aligners for alignment of the wheels, diagnostic hardware to establish any faults with the vehicle and establish if parts are replaced or re calibrated, utilising torque wrenches to tighten nuts/bolts to the manufacturer recommendations
  • Ability to rebuild vehicles post repair and reinstate safety critical systems including Safety Restraint Systems, airbags, seat belts and pretensions, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, cameras, Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) systems and Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) systems including collision avoidance technology.
  • Qualified in refrigerant handling to EC842 2006 or the most up to date revision of this legislative requirement to enable the repair or replacement of air condition/climate control parts such as condensers, evaporator compressor pump

Training schedule

This is a Vehicle Damage MET (Mechanical, Electrical and Trim) Apprenticeship programme, delivered by Inspiro Learning (formerly Remit Training).

Awarding Body: Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).

Training is delivered in the workplace and on block release at the Inspiro Automotive Academy in Doncaster. This means you will be required to stay in a hotel for 12 separate weeks (Monday - Friday) over the duration of the programme, which equals 4 weeks per year. All associated costs for training are met by the employer and there will be no cost to you.

You will also be assigned a dedicated Development Coach who will visit you every 4-6 weeks either in the workplace or remotely via Microsoft Teams, giving 1-2-1 advice and guidance to help you achieve the following IMI qualifications:

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Maths (grade 4/C)
  • English (grade 4/C)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

  • On the job training: 80% of your training will be undertaken within a bodyshop where you will be allocated a mentor who will guide and coach you during your apprenticeship
  • Off the job training: this is undertaken at one of our Registered Training Providers or other RTP
  • Contract Duration: normally 3 years but a competency based training approach applies for possible early completion
