Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Carry out routine servicing and maintenance on a wide range of vehicles under supervision.
- Assist with diagnosing mechanical, electrical and electronic faults using the latest diagnostic equipment.
- Learn to repair and replace vehicle components, including brakes, suspension, steering, clutches and engines.
- Work on prestige vehicles including Audi, Mercedes-Benz and other premium manufacturers.
- Complete vehicle health checks and accurately record findings.
- Use specialist workshop tools and manufacturer-approved diagnostic software.
- Follow manufacturer specifications and company quality standards.
- Learn how to carry out MOT preparation and rectification work.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised workshop in accordance with Health & Safety procedures.
- Work closely with experienced technicians to develop practical skills and technical knowledge.
- Build confidence in customer service by understanding repair requirements and communicating with the service team.
- Attend training and complete all coursework required for the Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
- Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
- Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
- Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
- Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
- Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
- Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
- Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
- Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
- Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
- Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
- Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
- Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Other requirements
- A genuine interest in the motor vehicle industry and a willingness to learn.
- Punctual, reliable and committed to completing both workplace training and college studies.
- Willing to work as part of a busy workshop team and follow instructions from experienced technicians.
- A strong commitment to maintaining high standards of workmanship and customer service.
- Able to follow Health & Safety procedures and keep the workshop clean and organised.
- Due to the nature of the role, applicants should be physically capable of carrying out workshop duties, including lifting components and working in confined spaces when required.
- A full UK driving licence is desirable but not essential at the start of the apprenticeship.
- Applicants will be encouraged to obtain a licence during their training if they do not already hold one.
- Previous work experience in a garage, hobby mechanics or motor vehicle studies would be an advantage but is not essential, as full training will be provided.
