Summary
Foundation apprenticeships are introductory courses that help young people get started in an industry. You do not need to have any specific qualifications or experience to apply.
Anyone between 16 and 21 can start a foundation apprenticeship.
If you're between 22 and 24, you can start if you:
- have an EHC plan
- are in care or have been in care
- are in prison or have been in prison
As a Health and Social Care Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced professionals supporting people to live independently in their own homes and within the community. You will gain valuable hands-on experience, receive structured training, and develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for a successful career in care.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Typical duties will include:
- Supporting people with learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, mental health needs, or older adults to live as independently as possible.
- Assisting with personal care, including washing, dressing, and maintaining personal hygiene where required.
- Supporting individuals with meal preparation, eating and drinking, and promoting healthy nutrition.
- Encouraging and supporting people to take part in community activities, appointments, education, employment, and social events.
- Assisting with light household tasks such as cleaning, laundry, shopping, and maintaining a safe home environment.
- Promoting independence by encouraging people to develop daily living and life skills.
- Building positive, professional relationships with the people you support, their families, and other healthcare professionals.
- Following individual care and support plans while delivering person-centred care.
- Accurately completing daily care records, incident reports, and other required documentation.
- Supporting individuals with medication in line with training, company policies, and legal requirements.
- Safeguarding vulnerable adults by recognising and reporting any concerns promptly.
- Following health and safety procedures, infection prevention and control measures, and confidentiality policies at all times.
- Attending regular training, supervision sessions, and working towards completing your apprenticeship qualification.
- Working as part of a supportive team while developing the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in health and social care.
