Summary

We are seeking a committed and energetic Motorcycle Apprentice to join our workshop. In this role, you will work alongside experienced mechanics helping to repair, service and customise motorcycles. It’s a hands-on learning position designed for someone who is eager to master the trade from the ground up.

Wage

£16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Assist with routine maintenance (oil changes, brake checks, tyre fitting, etc.)
  • Help dismantle, clean, inspect and reassemble motorcycle components
  • Support in diagnostics and identifying mechanical or electrical faults
  • Aid in custom fabrication and fitting parts as required
  • Maintain a safe, clean and organised work area
  • Learn and apply good workshop practices and safety standards

What We’re Looking For:

  • Genuine interest in motorcycles and custom builds
  • Mechanical aptitude; some hands-on experience (even if personal-project or hobby work) is a plus
  • Good attitude: reliable, punctual, willing to learn
  • Ability to follow instructions and work well in a team
  • Basic understanding of mechanical/electrical systems is desirable

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Perform the fundamental engineering tasks which most procedures include, such as: cutting, drilling, filing, removing and replacing bolts, screws and clips, replacing seals, extracting damaged fasteners and using fabrication skills
  • Assist in upholding high standards of safety and efficiency in the workshop, adhere to the requisite business processes (e.g. environmental awareness, health and safety practices, record keeping, and customer contact) and standard workshop
  • Safely secure motorcycles to ramps and use specialised supporting stands in order to remove road wheels and major components, including: brake systems, suspension and drive (chain, belt or drive shaft)
  • Successfully inspect and prepare a motorcycle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer e.g. following a service, complex repair, pre-delivery inspection by checking work against
  • Service and maintain motorcycles in line with manufacturer specifications logged in manuals and online
  • Remove, repair and replace components in line with manufacturers defined instruction
  • Use diagnostic methods, mechanical and electrical measuring tools and equipment to check compliance and rectify faults
  • Investigate symptoms of motorcycle fault(s) and identify the underlying causes prior to repair
  • Access specific information e.g. motorcycle repair information, wiring diagrams, maintenance tables, technical production information, safety recalls
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles, logical problem-solving techniques and complex

Training schedule

  • Candidates will work towards achieving the Motorcycle Technician (Repair and Maintenance) Apprenticeship Standard at level 3
  • They will also be required to study towards achieving level 2 maths and English functional skills if they do not already hold equivalent qualifications

The programme lasts for 36 months, with on-going support from the Academy team: 

  • Constant on the job support and training with their allocated buddies and two members of the full-time on-site trainers
  • Regular 1-2-1's to ensure they are "on-track" with their college work and progressing with their practical skills in line with company expectations
  • Financial rewards for passing each college practical Gateway exams
  • Access to MHFA throughout the business to ensure learners get the correct help with coping mechanisms for their learning journey
  • The post-holder must be working towards gaining their driving licence by the end of the apprenticeship due to the requirements of the role. The apprentice will be expected to purchase basic tools throughout the apprenticeship duration to build up their own kit
  • Throughout the duration of the programme, the candidates will be expected to travel to EMTEC's training centre in Nottingham for 24 separate weeks to carry out skills training
  • The blocks are individual one-week blocks. Residential accommodation will be provided if required for the candidates

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths and English (grade 4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
