Summary

Join Hull City Council’s Revenues team as an Administration Apprentice. You will be responsible for the billing and collection of Council Tax, Business Rates and BID accounts. You will maintain accurate records, and deliver excellent customer service. Gaining valuable skills while working in a busy, customer-focused environment.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Support and coordinate the efficient administration of Council Tax, Business Rates and BID services, including processing customer information, maintaining records and supporting billing and collection activities.
  • Provide advice and guidance to customers and stakeholders through telephone, face-to-face, written and electronic channels, ensuring accurate, clear and professional responses to enquiries.
  • Maintain accurate Local Taxation databases and customer records, ensuring liabilities, payments, discounts, exemptions and account amendments are processed correctly and in line with legislation and Council policies.
  • Coordinate appointments and administrative support for officers undertaking customer visits, including scheduling, rearranging appointments and carrying out follow-up contact where required.
  • Support and promote effective income collection processes through the issuing of bills, reminders and recovery correspondence, and by assisting with debt recovery activities in accordance with agreed procedures and timescales.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive customer and financial information in compliance with Data Protection legislation, information governance requirements and Council policies.
  • Work collaboratively and promote effective working relationships with colleagues, customers, partner organisations and external agencies to support consistent and high-quality service delivery.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Skilled in the use of multiple IT packages and systems relevant to the organisation in order to: write letters or emails, create proposals, perform financial processes, record and analyse data. Examples include MS Office or equivalent packages. Able to choose the most appropriate IT solution to suit the business problem. Able to update and review databases, record information and produce data analysis where required.
  • Produces accurate records and documents including: emails, letters, files, payments, reports and proposals. Makes recommendations for improvements and present solutions to management. Drafts correspondence, writes reports and able to review others' work. Maintains records and files, handles confidential information in compliance with the organisation's procedures. Coaches others in the processes required to complete these tasks.
  • Exercises proactivity and good judgement. Makes effective decisions based on sound reasoning and is able to deal with challenges in a mature way. Seeks advice of more experienced team members when appropriate.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships within their own team and across the organisation. Demonstrates ability to influence and challenge appropriately. Becomes a role model to peers and team members, developing coaching skills as they gain area knowledge.
  • Demonstrates good communication skills, whether face-to-face, on the telephone, in writing or on digital platforms. Uses the most appropriate channels to communicate effectively. Demonstrates agility and confidence in communications, carrying authority appropriately. Understands and applies social media solutions appropriately. Answers questions from inside and outside of the organisation, representing the organisation or department.
  • Completes tasks to a high standard. Demonstrates the necessary level of expertise required to complete tasks and applies themself to continuously improve their work. Is able to review processes autonomously and make suggestions for improvements. Shares administrative best-practice across the organisation e.g. coaches others to perform tasks correctly. Applies problem-solving skills to resolve challenging or complex complaints and is a key point of contact for addressing issues.
  • Takes responsibility for initiating and completing tasks, manages priorities and time in order to successfully meet deadlines. Positively manages the expectations of colleagues at all levels and sets a positive example for others in the workplace. About this employer

The purpose of the Revenues Apprentice role is to support the efficient delivery of the Council’s Revenues Service by assisting with the administration, billing and collection of Council Tax, Business Rates and Business Improvement District (BID) accounts.  The role exists to help maximise income collection, maintain accurate customer and taxation records, and provide clear, responsive customer service to residents, businesses and partner organisations across Hull.  Alongside undertaking a Business Administration Level 3 apprenticeship, the postholder develops practical knowledge and skills in local taxation, customer service and administrative processes while contributing to the day-to-day operation of the Revenues team.

The role operates within a busy customer-focused Revenues and Benefits environment where the postholder works closely with managers, team leaders, frontline officers and external agencies.  The job involves communicating with customers through telephone, written and digital channels, including dealing with sensitive or emotionally challenging situations relating to taxation, debt recovery and financial hardship.  The postholder also supports visiting officers through appointment scheduling and administrative coordination, contributing to safe and effective service delivery.  The role makes an important contribution to ensuring that services are delivered accurately, professionally and in line with legislation, Council policies and performance standards.
