Summary

Managing risk and arranging the appropriate insurance for SMEs is key to their survival. You will become their trusted advisor, helping them navigate their risks by offering unrivalled advice on how to protect those risks through insurance.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

80% of your time (4 days) will be on the job training (at 40 Broad Street, Staple Hill, BS16 5NS), including:

  • Observing the team both in the office and at client meetings
  • Speaking to small businesses about their risks and advising on insurance covers
  • Data entry – inputting client details into appropriate insurer quote engines
  • Negotiating with insurers to ensure you tailor covers to meet the client’s needs
  • Regular contact with clients and amending their insurances to stay relevant to the changes in their business
  • Managing claims to ensure a positive outcome for our clients
  • Attending networking events remotely and across the Southwest to get to know the local small business community
  • Assisting with procedure manuals and templates for future learners
  • Writing thought pieces for social media to build brand reputation
  • Involvement in the Chartered Insurance Institute/BIBA to promote the profession

  • Identify information from a range of sources to determine an appropriate course of action including a recommendation, a decision or a referral.

  • Apply organisational quality assurance policies and procedures in their role and within the limits of own authority.
  • Apply appropriate method of communication for audience and circumstances.
  • Records, verifies, maintains and where appropriate, shares information.
  • Compliant with relevant governance, policies and procedures.
  • Identify work with stakeholders and creates and maintains a network of stakeholders needed to undertake casework effectively and to conclusion.
  • Balances competing priorities in order to meet deadlines.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships.
  • Work as part of a team to help achieve results.
  • Identify potential claims fraud and determine the correct action to prevent loss.
  • Manage insurance claims and/or payments within the limits of responsibility in line with policies and procedures.
  • Identify and manage insurance risks within the limits of responsibility in line with policies and procedures.
  • Recommend insurance and premiums decisions within the limits of responsibility and in line with organisational policies and procedures.
  • Gather and interpret relevant information to provide a return on insurance decisions.
  • Match client’s needs with available insurance products and services.
  • Optimises the potential return on insurance decisions within the scope of own role by identifying and positioning the client’s case with the insurer.

Training schedule

Knowledge is one of our core values. As such, this will be a circa 3-year programme starting with a 15-month programme to achieve the Certificate level qualification and then a second programme of circa 20 months to get to the Diploma. The qualifications to earn include;

CILA Certificate in Insurance

CII Certificate in Insurance

CII Certificate in London Markets Insurance

Your working week:

20% of your time (1 day) will be spent studying remotely including:

·        Reading/researching and writing assignments/attending exams with a focus on the general insurance marketplace, insurance law, accounting principles, governance as well as how insurance products operate including liabilities and property damage/business interruption.

·        Attending seminars and workshops including those provided by your trainer, insurers, and the Chartered Insurance Institute.

The reamining 80% of your time (4 days) will be on the job training (at 40 Broad Street, Staple Hill, BS16 5NS).

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths (grade 4-9)

A Level in:

English (grade 4-9)
