Summary
BCUSU is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Kitchen Team Leader Apprentice to join our hospitality team across our busy student pub kitchen and pizza kitchen.
This is an exciting opportunity to earn while you learn, gaining real supervisory experience whilst completing a fully funded Level 3 Senior Production Chef apprenticeship.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
From leading shifts and supporting Kitchen Assistants to delivering great food and customer experiences, you’ll play an important role in creating welcoming hospitality spaces for Birmingham City University students.
No two shifts are the same - from busy lunchtime service in our pub kitchen to afternoon pizza parties at Social Kitchen, or catered events, you’ll be part of a fast-paced, supportive team delivering high-quality food and experiences for our student community.
What you’ll be doing
- Leading kitchen operations during shifts
- Supervising and supporting Kitchen Assistants
- Preparing and serving food to agreed specifications and standards
- Maintaining excellent food safety, hygiene and allergen standards
- Supporting stock control, ordering and waste reduction
- Using EPOS and kitchen management systems
- Delivering excellent customer experiences during busy service periods
- Completing your Level 3 Senior Production Chef apprenticeship

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Supervise the production of centrally developed menu items and dishes according to organisational specifications.
- Ensure deliveries are checked and stored correctly.
- Monitor the correct use and maintenance of food production equipment.
- Acquire and share with the team up-to-date information regarding product range, brand development, promotions and current trends.
- Monitor the production of food to ensure clients’ needs are met.
- Monitor and ensure the effective implementation of food safety management systems.
- Monitor and ensure legislative compliance and the completion of due diligence documentation.
- Support team members to ensure the timely delivery of high quality food to the specification required.
- Maintain harmony across the team and with colleagues in other parts of the organisation, identifying and dealing with problems constructively to drive a positive outcome.
- Use effective methods of communication and operate in a fair and empathetic manner that achieves the desired result and demonstrates a customer centric culture.
- Identify development needs for self and team and actively encourage and support individuals to enhance their skills and knowledge.
- Effectively use techniques that support cost reduction, improve performance, revenue, profit margins and customers’ experience.
- Monitor costs, using forecasting to set realistic targets with the team.
- Effectively control resource allocation, minimise wastage and use sustainable working practices.
- Use technology to improve efficiency and productivity.
- Risk assess situations, identifying and isolating matters of concern, by establishing the cause and intervening accordingly to minimise risk to people and organisation.
- Carry out activities in line with business/brand values that actively market the business, support competitiveness and help meet business objectives.
Training schedule
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study online to gain professional knowledge and skills to achieve the Senior Production Chef Apprenticeship Level 3, including Functional Skills in Maths and English (if required).

After this apprenticeship
Successful completion of the Senior Production Chef Level 3 apprenticeship can provide a strong foundation for progression within the hospitality and catering industry. Apprentices may progress into roles such as Kitchen Team Leader, Sous Chef, Senior Chef de Partie or Kitchen Manager, with opportunities to specialise in areas including events, high-volume catering, menu development and people management.
The apprenticeship also supports progression into higher-level hospitality and leadership qualifications, including Hospitality Manager apprenticeships and wider supervisory or operational management roles. The skills and experience gained are highly transferable across the hospitality sector, supporting long-term career development in professional kitchens and food service operations.
