Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

You will support a range of clients and PR activities across our portfolio, working with some of the UK's leading hotels and event venues, including: 

  • Supporting our hotel and event venue clients' marketing and administrative activity, including updating website content and scheduling social media posts
  • Compiling and maintaining targeted media lists to support client campaigns
  • Researching industry trends, key calendar moments, events and relevant editorial opportunities
  • Assisting in the preparation of monthly client reports, including activity and press coverage reports
  • Liaising with journalists and influencers to coordinate media opportunities, including press visits
  • Supporting copywriting across a range of materials, including press releases, media alerts, blogs and social media content
  • Assisting in maintaining internal systems, databases and processes, ensuring information is accurate and up to date
  • Monitoring the media to identify relevant coverage and potential opportunities for clients
  • Supporting the use of PR and marketing tools and platforms, such as media monitoring services, distribution tools and email marketing systems (full training provided)
  • Attending internal meetings, training sessions and client meetings where appropriate
  • Contributing ideas to support Custard’s own PR and marketing activity

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Use IT systems and software to support campaigns.
  • Build stakeholder relationships and present to them in both formal and informal settings.
  • Support campaigns by undertaking tasks such as desk research, event co-ordination, and database management to ensure compliance with agreed service or performance levels.
  • Produce written content such as news releases, articles, social media content, bulletins, and blogs, that is accessible to meet the needs of different audiences and channels.
  • Able to adapt communication styles as appropriate to the audience.
  • Support the production of non-written content such as film production management, producing short user generated style content, live video streaming, social image creation, and infographic production.
  • Distribute content using social media channels.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative research to analyse and evaluate public relations and communications activities and present findings to project stakeholders.
  • Analyse and interpret complex subjects through different communication channels and identify areas for improvement.
  • Input to and review communications programmes and plans with a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles within their organisation's procedures.
  • Undertake risk assessment and provide information to support stakeholder planning and strategy.
  • Plan and deliver engagement activities for stakeholders, such as curating the content, supporting events, and collating feedback.
  • Proofread and edit communications materials such as news releases, graphics and video, and social media content.
  • Support team and colleague development through buddying or coaching.
  • Contribute to activities which focus on improving sustainability within their organisation's procedures.
  • Apply relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and ethical guidance where appropriate to their work.

Training schedule

  • Minimum of 6 hours off-the-job training per week
  • Blended learning, with online study materials, a monthly one-to-one online tutorial, and topic-specific webinars
  • Free attendance at 2 one-day courses on AI and Sustainability

Cambridge Marketing College's Level 4 PR & Communications Assistant apprentices are often new to PR/communications, but after the in-depth programme they learn and can use the skills of planning communication, of writing engaging content for the media or social media, of developing internal communications, and in how to evaluate communications.

To complete the apprenticeship, apprentices have to complete an End Point Assessment (EPA). This assessment includes:

  • Written project report
  • Presentation and questioning
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Professional discussion

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 5 or above)
  • Maths (grade 4 or above)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
