Summary

Soha Housing is a successful, community‑based housing association providing a range of affordable homes across South Oxfordshire and nearby areas. The in‑house repairs service, Soha Response, are looking to build a new apprenticeship programme with the recruitment of an Electrical Apprentice based throughout Oxfordshire.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Each apprentice will work alongside experienced operatives to gain hands‑on experience delivering responsive repairs, planned works, and day‑to‑day maintenance within customers’ homes.

Under supervision, they will develop core trade skills, customer‑service confidence, and a strong understanding of safety and compliance requirements relevant to their field.

Electrical Apprentice

  • The Electrical Apprentice will support qualified electricians with installation, testing, fault‑finding, and electrical safety checks
  • They will learn how to work safely on domestic systems while developing technical competence through a combination of site‑based learning and structured college study
  • This role supports the wider workforce plan, which includes current electrician vacancies and a clear need for developing new talent

Electrical Apprentice– Trade Tasks

  • Support installation, testing, and commissioning of domestic electrical systems, using calibrated test equipment
  • Assist with safe isolation, lock‑off, and verification that circuits are dead before work begins
  • Help replace light fittings and undertake basic electrical component swaps as directed
  • Carry out general electrical housekeeping tasks: clearing materials, managing waste, removing off‑cuts, and ensuring safe working areas
  • Support fault‑finding on domestic circuits under supervision from qualified electricians
  • Assist in liaising with other trades or contractors during multi‑trade jobs where electrical elements are involved

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Comply with all relevant legislation including environmental, regulations, codes of practice and other relevant information and guidance when planning and performing electrical work in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Identify and use personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be used when undertaking electrical work in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Carry out work in a tidy and safe manner, including restoration of the work area on completion of work.
  • Apply relevant legislation; Building Regulations; industry guidance notes; relevant codes of practice, the requirements of the current edition of the Wiring Regulations (BS7671) and other relevant standards while carrying out work.
  • Understand and apply the practices and procedures for planning and preparing to maintain electrotechnical systems and equipment.
  • Apply and use necessary mathematical and scientific techniques, formulae, and calculations that underpin an electrician’s work.
  • Use a range of tools, materials, equipment, and components, including prefabricated, relevant to performing electrical work in industrial, commercial and residential environments.
  • Design, plan, set up, and install electrical and related electronic systems including terminating and connecting cables in electrical wiring systems, installations, and equipment in commercial, industrial, and residential installations.
  • Inspect and test new and where applicable existing electrical Installations in industrial, commercial and residential environments using test equipment.
  • Apply diagnostic and problem-solving techniques to identify, assess and resolve electrical faults in industrial, commercial and residential environments.
  • Install electrical and electronic equipment and components, including traditional and novel technologies such as connections for EV charge points, battery storage, solar and thermal panels, heating and cooling systems.
  • Maintain electrical and electronic equipment and components, including traditional and novel technologies such as connections for EV charge points, battery storage, solar and thermal panels, heating and cooling systems.
  • Carry out and manage own work ensuring work is compliant to the standards required of an electrician working in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Record work including the completion and maintenance of work documentation, recording of test results and preparation of appropriate certification.
  • Use relevant digital learning platforms and business communication and collaboration applications.

Training schedule

Delivery model:

  • Work-based training with your employer
  • Day release during term time (approximately 1 day per week for 36 months)
  • Regular meetings with your training coordinator to monitor progress and well-being 
  • Approximately 4 on-site visits per year
  • Apprentices will need to complete a minimum of 1066 hours of off-the-job training during their apprenticeship

Apprenticeship Assessment and Information Session:  

  • Any new person applying for apprenticeship roles where Abingdon and Witney College deliver the training may be required to attend an Apprenticeship Assessment and Information Session at Bicester, Witney or Abingdon campus
  • This will consist of a series of initial assessments (required prior to any apprenticeship offer), completion of essential paperwork, the opportunity to find out more about the apprenticeship process, the training included, and a forum for your questions

Qualification checks:

We make every effort to ensure that applicants from non-traditional academic backgrounds or those who may not have the formal GCSE entry requirements can access apprenticeships where possible
  • The National Minimum Wage (NMW) for Apprentices is £8.00 per hour from April 2026. This applies to 16 - 18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over during the first year of their apprenticeship. After this, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Wage for apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training

Things to Consider for This Apprenticeship

Working Environments:

  • The role involves working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold, heat, rain, and muddy or uneven ground
  • Physical Demands: Apprentices will frequently lift, carry, and move tools, materials, and equipment, sometimes in confined spaces or awkward positions
  • Travel Between Sites: Work is carried out across multiple Soha properties, so apprentices will spend time travelling between locations and must be prepared for a mobile working routine
  • Practical, Hands‑On Tasks: Tasks may involve using power tools, working at heights, accessing lofts or under‑sink areas, and assisting with manual repairs
