Summary

We are looking for someone to join our team who will as a HGV Fitter; maintain, service and repair heavy goods vehicles, diagnosing faults, replacing parts, and ensuring vehicles are safe, roadworthy and compliant with regulations— keeping fleets running efficiently.

Wage

£15,704 to £25,396.80, depending on your age

Will pay the government recommendation for the first year and then will be reviewed in line with the apprentices’ performance.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

An apprentice will work alongside qualified fitters, gradually building skills and confidence. Their typical daily tasks include but not limited to;

  • Assisting with routine servicing and safety inspections
  • Learning to diagnose faults under supervision
  • Helping with repairs (brakes, tyres, filters, oil changes, basic component replacements)
  • Using workshop tools and diagnostic equipment safely
  • Keeping the workshop clean, organised, and compliant with safety procedures
  • Completing training logs, assessments, and coursework as part of their apprenticeship
  • Observing senior fitters to learn advanced mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repair techniques

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
  • The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
  • To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade Grade 4 or equivalent)
  • Maths (grade Grade 3 or equivalent)

Any additional GCSE’s relating to Engineering or practical Subjects such as D&T, engineering, computer science would be beneficial.
