Summary

The apprentice will work with time served sheet metal workers and fabricators, learning essential skills such as measuring, cutting, bending, welding and shaping sheet metal, also assisting with installing fabricated items on sites throughout the UK.

Wage

£15,704 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Full in-house training and day release at Blackpool & the Fylde College on an apprenticeship course, leading to:

  • Typical fabrications include stainless steel catering equipment & associated products, s/steel bars and food counters and all general metal fabrications
  • To undertake MIG & TIG welding to a high standard as specified (and if required)
  • Fabricate and work to CAD drawings & engineers’ instructions
  • To work in accordance with instructions and approved codes of practice
  • Safe operation of plasma, band saw, circular saw, press brake, guillotine, punch, notcher, welding plants, hand & power tools and any other items used in the day to day production
  • To work under own initiative and seek guidance if help is required
  • Provide input on improving production techniques/efficiencies
  • Identify training needs to enable you to carry out your job role efficiently and safely
  • Liaise at all levels, with colleagues, managers & customers
  • Ensure job materials & equipment are correctly used
  • Take responsibility for equipment
  • Take responsibility for individual health & safety, as well as the health & safety of your colleagues
  • Any other duties as required
  • Apprentices may be asked to assist skilled workers with installations on Customer’s sites throughout the UK

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
  • Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
  • Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
  • Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
  • Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
  • Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.

Initially, to progress within the company and become a fully qualified Sheetmetal Worker. 

Once qualified and with experience, possibility of taking the lead role on specific contracts, also assisting with the training of future apprentices/new employees.
