Summary

As a Motor Vehicle Technician Apprentice, you’ll combine hands-on experience in our workshop with structured training and the support of an experienced mentor. You’ll work towards achieving an IMI Level 3 qualification in Vehicle Servicing and Maintenance, setting you up to become a fully qualified Vehicle Technician.

£15,704 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

NMW depending on experience and qualifications. Wages will increase over time and will be rewarded for working well.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Inspecting and servicing vehicles to ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Learning to service vehicles, checking and maintaining them following clear instructions.
  • Maintaining a healthy and safe workshop by adhering to health and safety regulations.
  • Diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs using diagnostic methods and equipment. Learning to diagnose, repair and replace vehicle parts and components.
  • Providing customer service by being approachable and knowledgeable about the vehicle's systems.
  • Working independently while also being an effective team member and having good customer handling skills.
  • Working on all vehicle systems, from simple parts replacement to complex fault solutions.
  • Carry out vehicle checks and inspections.
  • Produce time estimates for repairs and maintenance to vehicles.
  • Maintain repair and service records.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Training schedule

Our new apprentice will be working and learning from Matthew on-the-job. Matthew first started working on vehicles when he was a young boy and always dreamed to continue that passion! He was fortunate to turn his passion into a career spanning 13 years as a Vehicle Technician + Mot Tester. The dream had always been to set up his own company and his own brand. Now running a successful company, he is now looking for an apprentice to work with him to grow the business.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths & English (grade 4-9 (A*- C))

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

After this apprenticeship

Once qualified, you will continue to work with Matthew as a qualified technician, helping to mentor and train new apprentices coming into the business as it grows.
