Summary

Working on our Baggage Systems at London Heathrow Airport on our 4-year apprenticeship pathway, you will work towards performing maintenance duties to ensure productivity and output, equipment availability, health & safety compliance, quality, Maximo reporting and team working to be optimised in accordance with agreed timescales.

Wage

£19,000 a year

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

You will be supported to achieve a Level 3 Mechatronics Service Technician qualification delivered through Uxbridge College.

As an Apprentice Mechatronics Service Technician, you will help keep Heathrow’s baggage systems running safely, reliably, and efficiently. You will be involved in tasks such as:

  • Maintaining and optimising a wide range of automated systems and machinery.
  • Assisting with corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance.
  • Supporting fault diagnosis across mechanical, electrical, and basic control systems.
  • Working collaboratively with experienced technicians to keep the system operating to the highest standards.
  • Upon successful completion, you will be able to apply for a permanent Service Technician role within Vanderlande.

Training

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Training schedule

You will be supported to achieve a NVQ Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician at Uxbridge College, where you will spend your first year. For this, you will be required to hold GCSEs in Maths and English at grade 4 or above (equivalent A* to C).

Training Structure:

Year 1

  • Three to four days per week spent at college.
  • Remaining days onsite at London Heathrow Airport working alongside our Service Technician teams.

Years 2–4

  • Primarily based onsite at Heathrow, gaining hands-on experience in a live airport environment.
  • Continued support and development from experienced Vanderlande technicians and Learning & Development teams.
  • One day per week at college to continue working towards and completing the BTEC qualification.

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

Maths and English (grade 4-9)

Desirable qualifications

AS Level or equivalent in:

Maths (grade 4-9)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

You will need a clear criminal record to be able to gain an airside pass. Must be prepared to work shifts. Although no experience is required, you will have a passion for engineering. The role is a highly active one where you will need to be willing and prepared to work shifts in year two.
