Summary

The role will form part of the Port Services and Infrastructure team, ensuring our cargo handling and marine services are able to continue delivering to our customers by keeping our plant, equipment, machinery and infrastructure up to standard and operating effectively.

Wage

£16,939 a year

First year - £8.78 per hour

Second year and beyond will then increase to £10.00 per hour if aged between 18-20 or £12.21 if aged 21and over

First year with training provider at SETA, Washington. The remainder of the apprenticeship programme will be based at The Port of Sunderland – Monday to Friday, various shifts TBC.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Assisting with mechanical and electrical repairs to the Port’s infrastructure, machinery and equipment.
  • Learn how to undertake electrical duties involving test and inspection, reactive.
  • Learn how to install, repair or replace new, damaged or defective parts or sections of the Port infrastructure.
  • Assist in diagnosing malfunctioning systems and components.

What you'll learn

  • Identify equipment to work on. Check plant configuration is as defined.
  • Prepare the work area for maintenance tasks.
  • Identify environmental and health and safety hazards and risks and apply control measures.
  • Apply health, safety, and environmental procedures in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, signage and barriers, working at height, confined spaces, and COSHH.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4 / C or above)
  • Maths (grade 4 / C or above)
  • Science (grade 4 / C or above)

Other requirements

Due to the nature of the work involved in this post, applicants must be 18 years of age or over by September 2026.

Applicants will be required to pass an initial assessment in English and maths and an engineering aptitude test as part of the recruitment and selection process.

Must be able to abide by rules and health and safety requirements.

Must be happy to work in a role which is physically demanding, working at height and in a ship’s hold, in all weather conditions.
