Summary

We are looking for someone who thrives in the fast-paced environment of our Aero Model Shop. You will become part of a highly skilled team and will support us through learning to assemble mechanical components, work with a variety of contemporary and traditional materials and gain experience preparing components for our F1 Aero programme.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Key Skills To Be Developed:

  • To be trained to use hand tools and implement this skill into building Wind Tunnel Models and components for Aerodynamic development
  • Develop an ability to read technical drawings, enabling you to build Models and Sub-Assemblies to our high standard
  • You will maintain good quality control for component manufacture
  • Gain full knowledge of all Model Areas: sub-assembly, preparation and painting, materials and manufacturing processes through mentoring from the Model Shop Shift Leaders
  • Develop an ability to execute model changes in the wind tunnel for aerodynamic development tests and liaise with the aerodynamicists to achieve performance targets
  • Become familiar with the storage of Model parts and locations of all parts using our software
  • Develop skills in fabrication and light machining duties
  • Develop the ability to use simple layup repair procedures, and Carbon fibre trimming

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Follow health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, segregation of resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Comply with engineering standards and regulations. For example, British Standards (BS), International Organisation for Standardisation standards (ISO). European Norm (EN).
  • Analyse engineering and manufacturing data and information to support technical outputs. For example, read and interpret text, data, engineering drawings, work instructions, method statements, operation manuals.
  • Apply scientific, technical or engineering principles.
  • Apply problem solving techniques to solutions for identified technical problems.
  • Organise, plan and prioritise workflow and scheduling of work with stakeholders.
  • Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
  • Produce job specific technical outputs. For example, engineering drawings, quality control management, computer control programming, business improvement, adverse incident reports, technical investigations, equipment appraisals and specifications.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 5 and above)
  • Maths (grade 5 and above)
  • Science (grade 5 and above)
  • Two other GCSEs (grade 5 and above)
