Course contents:
As an Apprentice Engineer, you will be trained to:
Use information technology to create and manage documentation, produce reports, and communicate effectively across the business
- Read, interpret, and apply technical documentation, including drawings, manuals, specifications, and work instructions to support maintenance and engineering tasks
- Carry out planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance on a range of systems, including electrical, mechanical, fluid power, and control systems
- Plan and organise maintenance activities, selecting the appropriate tools, materials, and resources, while working to timescales and quality standards
- Apply health and safety regulations, including risk assessments, isolation procedures, and safe systems of work, ensuring a safe working environment at all times
- Develop fault-finding and diagnostic skills to identify and resolve issues on complex equipment and engineered systems
- Maintain accurate records and documentation, including job sheets, service logs, test results, and technical reports, supporting compliance and asset management
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency, performance, and reliability
- Communicate professionally with colleagues, managers, and stakeholders, coordinating activities and sharing technical information effectively

About this employer
Portland Grain Limited is based at Barmby Moor, York, and has provision for up to 40,000 tonnes of cereal and food/ feed crops. The facility offers storage for wheat, barley, oil seeds, and pulses in flat stores or silos, and container loading of bulk products via weighbridge.
All grain is handled, stored, and monitored in accordance with the Trade Assurance Scheme for Combinable Crops (TASCC). We have a fully equipped TASCC approved laboratory for the testing and analysis of products, storage, and supply. This approval provides confidence that grain integrity is protected throughout storage, from intake to out loading.
