Summary

This is a 3.5-year Degree Apprenticeship program designed to develop future leaders across The Sofa Delivery Company's supply chain. Apprentices will gain a 360-degree understanding of our logistics network through rotations in large-scale distribution centres and central support functions.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The successful individual will:

  • Work towards a BSc (Hons) degree in Supply Chain Management. This involves block release training at Sheffield Hallam University for theoretical knowledge, which will pair with your on-the-job experience within this placement
  • Master the Operation through hands-on placements across different logistics functions. You'll learn exactly how we handle stock, maintain our fleet, and coordinate complex home deliveries
  • Develop Leadership Skills on the front line, taking responsibility for managing warehouse teams and delivery experts to keep our safety high and deliver moments that matter
  • Improve How We Work, finding ways to make our processes simpler-from making routes more efficient to giving customers better service. You’ll have a genuine chance to make a real impact
  • Collaborate with fellow apprentices on strategic projects to demonstrate knowledge, apply experience, and create delivery moments that matter

Key Responsibilities:

Placements will be initially assigned by The Sofa Delivery Company. Later placements will be developed with your needs and ambitions in mind. Options include:

  • Customer Delivery Centre (CDC) Warehouse: Supporting the Shift Manager, responsible for meeting all customer needs safely and efficiently, and leading teams to achieve Warehouse KPIs
  • Customer Delivery Centre (CDC) Transport: Supporting the Shift Manager, responsible for an effective and compliant transport department, engaging with drivers and managing performance
  • National Sort Centre/Home: A combination of the above roles, operating within a different model
  • Transport Compliance: Working within the compliance team to ensure legal and regulatory standards across the network
  • Grow (Commercial Operations): Engaging with our external clients to deliver outstanding service
  • Optimise or Evolve Projects: Joining the Innovation team to work on our in-year or future strategic projects

  • Practise in a sustainable and ethical way all sourcing and buying decisions

  • Apply relevant inventory control techniques and tools

  • Introduce strategies for managing inventory optimisation and rationalisation across the extended supply chain
  • Implement change in the supply chain in response to changes in production, scheduling and demand
  • Collaborate with manufacturing functions to meet criteria of quality, time and continuity
  • Manage distribution and logistics networks, inbound and outbound
  • Evolve alternative supply chains to ensure resilience and continuity of supply
  • Design activities for receiving, put-away, storage, replenish, order-picking and dispatch
  • Identify next-generation software and manage potentially disruptive technologies
  • Match innovation in IT with business needs including global sourcing and the international trade context
  • Meet the challenge of technology selection, development, implementation and application
  • Give guidance on meeting environmental and legal requirements and maintain a high regard for risk identification and reduction, and safety management
  • Articulate business purpose and values and establish key accountabilities for contract formation and negotiation
  • Introduce innovative distribution, delivery and return methods while managing risk
  • Implement the 7 "R's" of sustainability: remove, reduce, reuse, renew, recycle, revenue and read
  • Maintain the competitiveness of the supply chain
  • Agree, communicate, collaborate and coordinate supply chain and network imperatives with finance, HR, IT, sales and marketing functions and with key partners
  • Initiate value-adding strategic and operational processes through effective project and task management

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths and English Language (grade C or 4 and above)

A Level in:

Maths and at least one Science or Tech Subject (grade BBC)

BTEC in:

In a Science or Tech-based subject (grade DMM)
