Summary

The Childminder Assistant role is to work as part of a small setting to plan, deliver and support play‑based activities that promote children’s learning and development in line with the EYFS, support children to reach their developmental milestones, work collaboratively with colleagues, and safeguard children at all times.

£16,640 a year

Salary will start at a basic rate, dependent on experience, and will be reviewed after 3–6 months.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Plan, support, and participate in play-based activities that promote children’s learning and development.
  • Encourage, listen to and support children during play and daily activities.
  • Assist children with personal care needs, including toileting, nappy changing, dressing and mealtimes.
  • Accompany children on outings and planned trips with the registered childminder.
  • Ensure children’s safety at all times and follow safeguarding policies and procedures, raising concerns appropriately.
  • Comply with all setting policies, procedures and Ofsted requirements.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and age-appropriate environment by following health, safety and infection control procedures.
  • Follow emergency and accident procedures; complete First Aid training as required.
  • Complete and maintain accurate records and paperwork, including accident reports, attendance and cleaning records.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with children, families, the registered childminder and external professionals.
  • Communicate effectively with the registered childminder, following instructions and reporting concerns promptly, including whistleblowing where necessary.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding children, families and the setting at all times.
  • Complete required induction, training and ongoing professional development in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties to support the children and the childminder.

What you'll learn

  • Support babies and young children through a range of transitions and significant events. e.g moving onto school, moving house or the birth of a sibling.
  • Recognise when a child is in danger, at risk of serious harm or abuse and explain the procedures to be followed to protect them. Types of abuse including: domestic, neglect , physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
  • Identify risks and hazards in the provision and during off site visits relating to both children and staff and visitors and follow reporting procedures.
  • Use prevention and control of infection techniques for hand washing and food preparation and hygiene, deal with spillages safely, safe disposal of waste, using correct personal protective equipment.
  • Use equipment, furniture and materials safely and securely, following the manufacturers’ instructions and provision’s requirements.
  • Encourage children to be aware of personal safety and the safety of others and develop personal hygiene practices (including oral hygiene).
  • Promote health and wellbeing in the provision by encouraging babies and young children to consume healthy, balanced and nutritious meals, snacks and drinks appropriate for their age and be physically active through planned and spontaneous activity throughout the day, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Carry out respectful care routines appropriate to the development, stage, dignity and needs of the child, including eating (feeding and weaning or complementary feeding), nappy changing procedures, potty or toilet training, care of skin, teeth and hair and rest and sleep provision.
  • Communicate with all children, including those for whom English is an additional language and those with additional needs, in ways that will be understood. This includes verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Extend children’s development and learning through verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Encourage babies and young children to use a range of communication methods.

Training schedule

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Other requirements

Applicants will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check. Paediatric First Aid training and knowledge of safeguarding are essential (training may be provided as part of the apprenticeship).

The role may include occasional local school pick‑ups, located just two minutes from the setting.
