Summary

Wilde Consultants Ltd are recruiting an Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician for our highways consultancy team in Stockport. This apprenticeship combines college study with hands-on experience on live schemes, using CAD and site surveys, in an award-winning, family-run SME alongside experienced engineers.

Wage

£15,400 a year

You will be paid in line with the statutory apprenticeship minimum wage at the start of employment. Pay will increase with statutory changes where applicable and may be reviewed during the apprenticeship based on progress and performance.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Produce and update 2D and 3D engineering drawings using CAD software
  • Support the design of highways and infrastructure schemes, including sustainable solutions
  • Assist with site surveys, inspections and data collection
  • Help prepare technical, works and contract information
  • Apply health, safety and sustainability standards in daily tasks
  • Work to agreed instructions, standards and timescales
  • Work alongside engineers and technicians within a design team

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Apply appropriate civil engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how, to civil engineering and the construction process
  • Apply key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis, and evaluation to support the delivery of civil engineering models, designs, and technical solutions
  • Operate appropriate software packages for data gathering and analysis, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM), to create technical drawings, models and designs using relevant conventions and engineering terminology
  • Apply statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures, and regulations in the civil engineering environment, using risk management processes, procedures, and documentation
  • Support and contribute to the production or modification of civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and procedures and codes of practice
  • Apply environmental policies and sustainable principles in civil engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions and plan for wider sustainability
  • Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with quality assurance, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations
  • Consider equality, diversity and inclusion in the delivery of civil engineering projects
  • Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data
  • Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Training schedule

  • Training will be delivered through a combination of on-the-job learning at Wilde Consultants Ltd’s Stockport head office and day release at college
  • The apprentice will attend college one day per week during term time and work in the office for the remaining days
  • Outside of term time, the apprentice will work full time within the highways and transportation team

  • The apprenticeship will be delivered in line with the Civil Engineering Technician (Level 3) standard
  • Training will include structured workplace mentoring and support from experienced engineers and technicians
  • Progress will be monitored through regular reviews with the employer and training provider

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 5)
  • Mathematics (grade 6)
  • Science (grade 5)

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

Technology-based Subject(D&T or IT) (grade 5)

Other requirements

The apprentice will be required to work professionally within an office and site environment, follow health and safety procedures, and engage with college attendance as part of the apprenticeship. Reasonable flexibility will be expected to support learning and project requirements.

After this apprenticeship

On completion of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will be qualified as a Civil Engineering Technician. There may be opportunities to progress into a permanent technician role, continue professional development, and work towards Engineering Technician (EngTech) professional recognition, with potential progression to higher-level apprenticeships.
