Summary

The apprentice will support and develop enterprise-scale network and server infrastructure while completing the CompTIA Certified Systems Engineer Apprenticeship. The role provides structured training alongside hands-on experience in a demanding but supportive data centre environment.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Technical Environment

You will gain hands-on experience within a large-scale enterprise environment, including:

  • Predominantly Cisco-based networks
  • Around 800 network switches and 100 firewalls
  • Approximately 400 servers (physical and virtual)
  • Supporting connectivity for 300 users
  • Working alongside EUC, Server Infrastructure, and Network Engineers
  • Trust Systems supports the platforms that enable ARK
  • Datacentres to manage their data centre environments and internal operations.


Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of senior engineers, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting and maintaining network infrastructure (LAN, WAN, routing, switching)
  • Assisting with server and network device installation, configuration, and maintenance
  • Responding to network and infrastructure-related incidents and alerts
  • Monitoring system performance and escalating issues where required
  • Supporting firewall configuration and network security controls
  • Assisting with cloud and hybrid infrastructure tasks
  • Maintaining accurate technical documentation and network diagrams
  • Participating in change, upgrade, and maintenance activities
  • Applying learning from the apprenticeship programme in the workplace
  • Delivering a professional, customer-focused service

Through the apprenticeship and workplace experience, you will develop skills in:

  • Network design, implementation, and troubleshooting

  • Apply tools and or techniques to gather information to troubleshoot issues and or isolate, repair or escalate faults.
  • Communicate outcomes of tasks and record actions in line with organisational procedures.
  • Upgrade, apply and test components to systems configurations ensuring that the system meets the organisation’s requirements and minimises downtime.
  • Interpret information and or specifications received from a manager, customer or technical specialist and accurately implement the defined requirements.
  • Implement techniques to optimise systems or component performance in line with defined specifications.
  • Apply the required level of responsibility when organising and prioritising work tasks, clients’ or stakeholders’ requests in line with SLAs and organisation processes.
  • Explain their job role within the business context to stakeholders to enable a clear understanding on both sides of what their remit is and convey technical constraints.
  • Operate securely, and apply process, policies and legislation within their business responsibilities.
  • Configure and maintain network addressing in line with customer requirements.
  • Ensure compliance of network engineering outputs with change management processes including Secure Access Service Edge SASE or Zero-trust networking .

Training schedule

As part of the Level 4 Network Engineer Apprenticeship Standard, you’ll be on a fast track to an industry-recognised qualification and your dedicated industry coach will support you through a blended approach that will include remote, in-person, 1-2-1 and group learning.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C and above)
  • Math (grade 4/C and above)

Other requirements

The candidate will need to pass BPSS and SC clearance, ARK follow Crown Hosting SC rules which means the applicants must not have been out of the county for more than 3-months (in total) in any 12-month period over the last 6-years, along with the other SC requirements listed on the UKSV website.
