Summary

We’re currently offering the opportunity for apprentices to gain valuable experience and develop a number of key skills that will help you to pursue a career in the quantity surveying and construction industry. You will be assisting senior managers with the budgeting of construction projects and the control of costs during a construction project.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Help manage the commercial side of construction projects and look for ways to minimise the total cost of the project to the business whilst still meeting the required standards and levels of quality
  • You will split time between working in the office and out on site, preparing payments and cost reports and managing relationships with various stakeholders  
  • Work closely with the project team to identify and tackle challenges throughout a project
  • Help build and maintain relationships with both Clients and Subcontractors as well as with teams across the business  
  • Have involvement in procurement, negotiation, valuation and ensuring payments are made with subcontractors
  • Submit client Application For Payments (AFP’s) on a monthly basis
  • Attend project control meetings to understand and review progress on site
  • Run and reviewing cost reports to ensure accurate forecasting, both internally and to the client

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Health and Safety: Apply health and safety issues to all activities.
  • Sustainability: Demonstrate application of the principles of sustainability.
  • Construction Technology: Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects
  • Contracts: Be able to apply different types of contracts to different situations.
  • Procurement: Assist in the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
  • Cost control: Assist in the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
  • Financial reporting: Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
  • Administration: Assist in the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.

Training schedule

Level 4 Construction Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship.  

  • A Level 4 qualification in Construction and Built Environment that meets the knowledge requirements of the standard and is approved by the industry’s recognised professional bodies meeting the educational requirements for Technician status or the equivalent level of membership
  • You will receive full on-the-job training by your dedicated mentor
  • Your apprenticeship will be supported by an external service provider at college or in a classroom environment
  • The training will be 1-week blocks with Leeds College of Building, which may need you to stay away from home, but all related expenses will be covered by JN Bentley

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • 3 further subjects (grade 9-4)
  • English (grade 9-4)
  • Maths (grade 9-4)

A Level in:

Relevant Subject - BTEC or T-Level Equivalent (grade A* - C)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

Full clean driving licence: desirable – we would be looking for individuals to pass their driving test whilst employed with us, if not already done so. This is required for any site visits that may need to be carried out. Willingness and flexibility to travel to sites across your operational region.

After this apprenticeship

You will be an integral part of the team from day one with JN Bentley and when you complete your initial apprenticeship qualification you will be considered for further training. This will be discussed with both your mentor and our Learning and Development team.

From completing a level 4 qualification, this could then lead to you having the opportunity to carry out a Level 6 degree apprenticeship in Construction Quantity Surveying.
