Summary

We are looking for a creative and inclusive Early Years Educator Apprentice dedicated to providing high quality early education and care to children.

Wage

£11,778 to £19,047.60, depending on your age

National Minimum Wage

Pay will be National Minimum Wage for Apprentices for the duration of the probation period (3 months), followed by National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage thereafer.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

  • This is an active role, supporting children to learn and thrive.

  • You will support practitioners to plan and adapt learning for key children, and support the assessment of key children.

  • Early years educators are good role models, act with honesty and integrity, take part in team meetings and contribute to planning and setting activities.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
  • Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
  • Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
  • Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
  • Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
  • Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
  • Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.
  • Provide sensitive and respectful personal care for children from birth to 5 years.
  • Advocate for all children’s needs, including children which require SEND or EAL support.
  • Promote and facilitate children’s interpersonal communication to develop their social interactions and relationships.
  • Support children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture.
  • Support children to understand and respond to their emotions and make considered choices about their behaviours.
  • Assess the responsiveness of the environment for effective child-centred experiences in line with curriculum requirements.

Training schedule

You will learn on-the-job alongside experienced practitioners and a mentor. You will also attend conference days with other Early Years Educator Apprentices at our training centre in East London, and attend remote workshops with your tutor.

You will gain in-depth knowledge of child psychology, development theories, and the fundamental role of play. You will develop skills in creating inclusive, enabling indoor and outdoor environments, implementing the observation, assessment, and planning cycle to support individual learning, and maintaining professional relationships with parents, colleagues and outside agencies. You will have opportunities to develop and demonstrate a commitment to reflective practice.

All work and training settings are located in Tower Hamlets, London.

More training information

This is typically a 15-month qualification followed by an assessment period. Teaching includes face-to-face conference days, remote tutorials, asynchronous study and formative and summative tasks. You will learn from experts in the field, and have the opportunity to visit specialist settings where you will see theory and practice put into action. You will be supported in your studies and practice by a professional tutor, and a team of programme tutors and expert facilitators.

Progress is measured through a virtual portfolio consisting of assignments, evidence of professional competence in work-based situations, and practical demonstrations that apply the knowledge and skills gained. There are no written exams.

After this apprenticeship

Once you are qualified you may choose to seek employment in a nursery or school setting, or undertake further qualifications such as a Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Education.
