We are looking for a bright, motivated individual to come and join in our busy dispensary. We are offering the chance to work alongside experienced pharmacy technicians who will train and support you through your learning. Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Labelling medication for patients due to collect
- Following work place procedure to ensure this is done correctly
- Receiving and putting away deliveries AM/PM and ensuring stock is rotated before filling dispensary shelf
- Greeting patients and handing out their medication/taking medication requests
- Daily fridge temperature checks ensuring any issues are documented if needed
- Ordering stock for prescriptions waiting to be fulfilled
- Filling dossette boxes (weekly medication trays) for patients

What you'll learn
Course contents
- receive and log prescriptions
- assemble prescribed items, undertake an in-process accuracy check and issue prescribed items
- work according to legislative requirements, and organisational policies
- order, receive, maintain and issue pharmaceutical stock
- provide appropriate advice when authorised on supplied medicines and products, their storage and disposal
- work within the parameters of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the pharmacy
- act in accordance with systems and organisational governance
- recognise and act within the pharmacy regulatory, legal and ethical standards
- support the team in the development of others
- maintain and further develop your own skills and knowledge through development activities; maintain evidence of your personal development and actively prepare for and participate in appraisal
- communicate effectively with the public, carers and other health and social care professionals using a range of techniques to determine their needs, and keep information confidential
- handle information (record, report and store information) related to individuals and/or patients in line with local and national policies
- use pharmacy IT systems and other IT resources according to legislative requirements and organisational policies
- demonstrate person centred care and support within a pharmacy setting
- make pharmacy patients and patient safety your first concern
- use judgement and refer service user as appropriate to another member of the team, GP, healthcare worker, manufacturer etc
- maintain the interests of patients and the health of the public
- promote and advocate equality, diversity and inclusion
- promote healthy lifestyles to customers
- work safely within the parameters of your role using Standard Operating Procedures

- Training will take place at the workplace- no need to travel to a college
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade Grade A*-C/9-4)
- Maths (grade Grade A*-C/9-4)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
- You will be required to stand for long periods of the working day whilst dealing patients and taking in deliveries
- Some of the deliveries can be large so you must be able to move the totes safely (manual handling and lifting training will be given)
- Remain professional at all times – it is a busy environment and patients are always to be treated with kindness and respect
- Be able to handle patient queries with politeness and efficiency
About this employer
We are a training GP Practice with 7 GP Partners, 2 registrars, a paramedic, clinical pharmacist and a busy nursing team. As we are a semi-rural Practice, we run a dispensary which enables us to serve patients who live more than a mile away from the surgery. We currently have nearly 16,000 patients which makes for a very busy Practice!
After this apprenticeship
- We would hope that the successful applicant would integrate well with the team and become a permanent dispensary assistant with a view to going on to their NVQ Level 3 and other skills
