Summary

In this role, you will work within the commercial team to report on and optimise commercial income and expenditure. The role includes supporting the senior Quantity Surveyors as well as working independently to successfully deliver contracts on time, to budget and with satisfied customers.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • A combination of being responsible for fulfilling Quantity Surveying responsibilities on contracts which you will be allocated, and assisting other Quantity Surveyors fulfil their responsibilities. The balance of this will move to more independent responsibilities as your knowledge grows and is demonstrated.
  • Prepare, submit and negotiate Applications for Payment, collecting the information from relevant sources, e.g. Project Mangers, delivery records, site measures etc. 
  • Collect and present information necessary for the accounting team to create VAT Invoices. Co-ordinate with the Accounting team to resolve queries and receive timely payment.
  • Extract and organise information from various software programs to contribute to contract-specific and company-wide Monthly Reports and forecasts.
  • Present and review cost information with the Operations team to optimise expenditure.
  • Produce and send enquiries to subcontractors inviting them to tender. Assist Senior QS with compiling and negotiating subcontracts
  • Receive and analyse supplier and subcontractor quotations, then determine with the Operations team which to proceed with based on financial and non-financial factors.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Health and Safety: Apply health and safety issues to all activities.
  • Sustainability: Demonstrate application of the principles of sustainability.
  • Construction Technology: Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects
  • Contracts: Be able to apply different types of contracts to different situations.
  • Procurement: Assist in the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
  • Cost control: Assist in the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
  • Financial reporting: Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
  • Administration: Assist in the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.

Training schedule

  • Cert HE Quantity Surveying.
  • Day release delivery at ARU Chelmsford campus.

  • Familiarisation with the company processes and procedures that relate to your role.
  • Training and opportunities for guided self-learning on various software useful to QS and in construction, including: Excel, Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, and commercial/document control programmes such as Coins, A-site, 4Projects, Aconnex, Webcontractor, Payapps, Cemar, Buildertrend, BIM and CAD viewing programs.
  • Training and opportunity for guided self-learning on various topics relevant to Quantity Surveying such as Construction processes, Design responsibilities, Contracts, Disputes and, specific to our capabilities, knowledge of Steelwork, Metalwork and Architectural Finishes.
  • Time to time, we do in-house team training sessions by internal staff or external experts.
  • With the experience in the team, we will be able to help answer queries related to your outside-of-work learning.

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

English and Maths (grade C/4)

A Level in:

Any (grade 112 UCAS Points (BBC))

BTEC in:

Any (grade 112 UCAS Points (DMM))

Other requirements

The role will be based primarily in our office. There will be opportunities to visit sites for meetings or surveying/assessment. Travel costs will be reimbursed. Where situations arise, there may be opportunity for AQS to be based part or full time on site to get exposure to site operations and assist site teams organisationally.

Our workshop, including coatings facilities and logistics hub, is on the same premises as our office, so there will be opportunity and exposure to the construction processes happening.

Our design and project management teams are based in the same office, so you will be able to gather information directly and develop an understanding of design and operations processes.

It’s expected the successful candidate for the role will be involved with contracts in all divisions of the business but due to flexibility of the team and broad range of works we do and strengths within Commercial team and wider business, we will tailor the responsibilities of the apprentice to utilise strengths and/or provide exposure to areas for growth. You will report directly to our Commercial Manager and depending on the contracts you work on, to other Quantity Surveyors.

Advancement to Intermediate Quantity Surveyor Role.

From the intermediate Quantity Surveyor role, you can expect internal or external advancement to Senior Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Manager or other roles where Quantity Surveying expertise overlaps, such as Building Surveying, Contracts Management, Procurement Management, Planning or Dispute Resolution.
