Summary

This Assistant Quantity Surveyor role is an entry-level surveying position and provides essential support to senior members of the Cost Management Team. You will get training and exposure to budget preparation, cost estimation, financial analysis, documentation, construction phases and developing an understanding of JCT contracts.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Attending site visits for valuation purposes
  • Using digital measurement tools to quantify works (CostX, BCIS, Spons, Microsoft 360 Packages)
  • Conducting valuations
  • Producing and preparing written minutes for site meetings
  • Assisting in the preparation of cost reports and plans depending on the complexity of the cost report.
  • Managing and monitoring project costs – liaising with clients/contracts to discuss variations to costs
  • Developing contract administration skills
  • Assisting with contract documentation
  • Assisting in preparing post-contract documentation ‘final accounts’, ‘valuation certificates’ and other contract certificates.
  • Maintain Project documentation and files utilising SharePoint filing systems

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Be able to apply and evaluate the principles for the avoidance of conflict and dispute resolution such as adjudication and arbitration between project stakeholders
  • Be able to identify and manage risks of health, safety and welfare in line with legislation, hazards and safe systems of work
  • Analyse costs and benefits of sustainability initiatives on a project
  • Be able to advise on the legal aspects of a project and the most suitable form of contract to be used to ensure fairness and efficiency
  • Be able to advise on the most suitable construction solutions that maximise value for clients and enhance the cost effectiveness of the project within the budget constraints
  • Be able to advise on the appropriateness of various procurement routes and manage and report on the tendering and negotiation processes to select specialist contractors
  • Advise on appropriate methods of measurement of completed works and issue documentation required for payment to specialist contractors and income from client
  • Advise construction team and the client on strategies to control predicted expenditure in line with the budget
  • Carry out risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate risk
  • Monitor, report and advise construction team on project cashflows and profitability. Evaluate and advise on financial implications of decisions during the construction phase
  • Assess, interpret and report on progress and assist in the control of programmes during the construction phase

GCSE in:

Maths and English (grade 4/C or above)

Other in:

UCAS (grade 96 Points)

Other requirements

Apprentices must have the right to work in England and meet the Department for Education (DfE) residency status requirements. You will spend at least 50% of your working hours in England. Be 18 years or over at the start of the programme (due to health and safety) and you will be directly employed in a job role that will enable the requirements of the apprenticeship to be achieved. This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS Check.
