Summary

Big Red Construction is seeking a motivated and details-oriented Finance Apprentice to join their Finance team. This role is ideal for someone beginning their career in accounting and finance who wants to gain hands-on experience while continuing to develop their knowledge.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The position plays a key role in supporting day-to-day financial operations, with a strong focus on Purchase Ledger Clerk duties, while assisting the wider finance team in delivering accurate and timely financial information.

Purchase Ledger Responsibilities:

  • Process supplier invoices accurately and promptly
  • Match purchase orders, delivery notes, and invoices, including coding invoices to correct account
  • Review invoice discrepancies and liaise with internal departments or suppliers to resolve queries
  • Set up new suppliers and maintain supplier details in the finance system
  • Prepare supplier statement reconciliations and follow up on missing or incorrect invoices
  • Support the preparation of weekly and monthly payment runs, and associated invoice filing for easy retrieval
  • Assist with period closing
  • Ensure all purchase ledger transactions comply with internal controls and approval workflows
  • Maintain organised electronic and paper filing systems for purchase ledger documents

General Finance Responsibilities:

  • Assist with sales ledger tasks including raising customer invoices and credit notes
  • Take control and responsibility for an account's mailbox
  • Help with bank reconciliations and cashbook updates
  • Support month-end processes, including posting journals under supervision
  • Provide administrative support to the finance team, including data entry and filing
  • Contribute to the preparation of financial reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist with stock reconciliations and expense processing

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

  • Assistant Accountant Level 3
  • Off the job training will take place one day a week at Oldham College

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

English and Maths (grade 4-9 (A*-C))

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
