Summary
You’ll be working within the Finance team based at our offices in Huddersfield, reporting directly to the Financial Controller. As an apprentice, over the duration of the apprenticeship, you will gain a comprehensive overview of the day-to-day functions of a busy finance office.

The apprenticeship rate of pay is currently £7.55 per hour however, the starting rate may be higher but this will be dependent on experience. The salary may be negotiable. The salary may also increase after a probationary period.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
The role is designed to provide an overview of all aspects of the finance function within a business environment; duties will be aligned to the apprenticeship training programme and apprentices will be mentored with a view to developing their progression on to either an AAT or ACA/CIMA course.
There is a strong possibility that you will gain a permanent position following successful employment as well as achievement of the full apprenticeship qualification.
What you will learn:
- Purchase and sales ledger reconciliation
- Processing purchase orders
- Bank reconciliation
- Payroll processing
- Timely collation of data from a range of sources,
- Assistance with preparing monthly management accounts
- Administrative duties
Once trained, complete VAT returns, deal with data entry to month-end management accounts and year-end financial statements.
As part of your contract of employment, completion of the Apprenticeship Training Programme forms part of your duties as well as helping with your personal and professional development; the requirements to complete the programme are as follows:
Attend and be punctual for all inductions, lessons and work-based training/support sessions.
Complete all required assignments with regard to your apprenticeship by the required timeline.
Build up your portfolio of evidence, ongoing during your apprenticeship programme.
Access support from your tutor/assessor as and when required.
Access support from your manager with regard to any evidence requirements or support as and when required.
The above is not an exhaustive list of duties, and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by the organisation which is relevant to your post within the company to meet the overall business objectives.

- Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
- Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
- Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
- Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
- Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
- Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
- Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
- Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

Training schedule
Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship Standard Level 3:
An Assistant Accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work predominately either as an assistant accountant within practice or alternatively within the finance function of an organisation. Part of their role will involve assisting in the day-to-day financial activities such as data entry to month-end management accounts and/or year-end financial statements. In addition, the Assistant Accountant may find themselves involved in regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns or assisting in the preparation of tax computations.
You will gather work-based evidence to demonstrate the required Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours during your apprenticeship. The apprentice will evidence that they are collating and recording data on financial information and performance accurately by applying accounting standards and concepts and will evidence analysis of reconciliation, payroll, VAT return information. They will need to prepare accurate management information and use IT packages for this.
The recommended time to complete is 15–18 months to allow for confirmation of successful examination results/re-sits.
The AAT L3 course starts in January and September. The day release is TBC.
END POINT ASSESSMENT:
Assessment will be through examinations in Bookkeeping, Computerised Accounting and AAT Level 3 Accounting. Apprentices will also be assessed through a synoptic end-test covering the knowledge & skills gained, a portfolio comprising a range of evidence produced in the workplace and a reflective discussion which will be a structured interview. All components will need to be passed in order to be awarded the apprenticeship.
An End-Point Assessment will be conducted by an external provider (interview, portfolio and synoptic test).
The end-point assessment is designed to enable apprentices to demonstrate that they are fully conversant in the Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours expected of individuals at this level.
It is designed to provide assessors with a holistic view of the apprentice, and to allow them to assess to what extent the apprentice meets or exceeds the apprenticeship standard.
You will be required to attend Kirklees College in Huddersfield, one day as part of your apprenticeship.
