Typical operations carried out by a transfer section are:

  • Preparation of a machine for changeover, washing down, tidying the area, removing tooling and returning it to location
  • Organising the tooling for a new job, removing from location, setting up and tool grinding as required
  • Installing drilling and turning tooling into the machine
  • Setting strokes, feeds and speeds of the individual units
  • Setting up threading attachments for internal and external threads
  • Setting up recessing units
  • CNC programming
  • Ensuring a machine is set up to produce a finished part, that is within the sizes and tolerances specified by the engineering drawing for that part
  • Use of gauges and measuring equipment to achieve the above
  • Complete and comply with all documentation required by our internal procedures and quality standards
  • Free hand grinding of Taps and Drills
  • Setting up the Robot and Optical recognition systems for the fully automated machines
  • Thread Chaser grinding and set up using the relevant Jigs and tools
  • Basic fault finding on all machines
  • Basic maintenance tasks, replacing drive belts and motors etc.
  • Repairs, regrinds and replacement of damaged tooling
  • Provide assistance and guidance to the Operators running the machines
  • When a sufficient level of training has been achieved, be able to run a shift
  • Train others to a high standard

Desired skills

We are looking for a dynamic, forward-thinking and safety conscious individual to join the Transfer department and complement the team.

The candidate must have a passion for Engineering and be able to absorb and have an interest in the technology and skills relating to multiple Engineering disciplines.

An awareness of the importance of completing Setting tasks in good time, without compromising the quality of work, is essential, especially as we are a high-volume producer working to tight deadlines under pressure.

Personal qualities

The job will require the apprentice to work well with a team of people, but ultimately be able to function on their own once training is completed.

Desired qualifications

GCSEs at grades C/4 or above (or equivalent) in maths and English.

Future prospects

We are committed to the continual development of our technical staff, so it would be expected that a successful candidate, post apprenticeship, would continue with training focused on gaining an in-depth knowledge of the machinery and working towards possibly fulfilling a Supervisory role, if one becomes available and the candidate has the aptitude and desire for this.

Progression to a HNC or Degree course would be considered in the future, based on merit and the requirements of the company.
