The Technical Apprentice is responsible to the Head of Lighting and Technical for assisting with technical services relating to productions, performances, and events in the theatre, and for the maintenance and technical servicing of Curve’s performance spaces. The Technical Apprentice is also responsible, as necessary, for contributing to arrangements for the servicing of Curve promotions off site.

The key objectives of the post are:

  • To work across Curve Technical departments, learning and building experience to provide a high level of technical skill across Curve’s Stages


The technical duties of this post include the entire spectrum of practical theatre crafts. It includes a variety of art forms, events, and other such activities as are promoted by or at Curve in the theatre’s performance spaces and occasionally outside Curve. In particular it involves work with:

  • Stage scenery and equipment
  • Automated Flying
  • Lighting
  • Sound
  • Video

Servicing and Operation:

  • To ensure the highest standards of presentation for all Curve's work
  • To liaise and communicate effectively
  • To follow established safe working practices in the pursuance of duties and adhere to Curve's Health and Safety policy
  • To ensure that visiting companies, artists, and technicians under the post holder's support and supervision follow established safe working practices in the pursuance of duties and adhere to Curve's Health and Safety policy
  • To develop and maintain good working relationships with: Colleagues within the department and across Curve and a wide range of artists, companies, producers, professionals, general public and voluntary sector users of Curve's facilities
  • In conjunction with the team at Curve, to ensure that the theatre works as an effective and welcoming base for performing arts activities and that facilities and services are appropriately provided
  • Work alongside contractors, freelancers and artists and assist them in their work on fit ups and production periods, ensuring all areas are ready for technical rehearsals.
  • Assist in the preparation of the theatre spaces to the specifications of visiting companies and assist with the visiting technical departments, rigging and operating a wide range of technical equipment and scenery for and during performances

Technical Equipment Maintenance:

  • To assist in maintaining and repairing the equipment within the Department's control, or recommend when outside assistance may be required
  • To ensure routine cleaning and tidying of theatre spaces, studios and store rooms, and ensure the maintenance of safe working environments
  • Stock take consumables and ensure all storage areas are kept safe and tidy


  • To participate in training and development activities required as part of the apprenticeship
  • Undertake any other duties which may be required from this post

This position will lead to the qualification Creative Venue Technician Level 3. Gaining the qualification will be subject to end point assessment. Time will be given for both off the job and on the job training; throughout their time on their programme the apprentice will be assessed by industry practitioners to ensure they meet the needs of the Creative Venue Technician Level 3 standard.

Creative Venue Technician.

Apprentices learn the skills they need on the job with the guidance of a development coach who is an expert from industry. You’ll finish your apprenticeship with a recognised qualification, valuable industry experience, money, and substantial opportunities for promotion.

Summative Portfolio.

You will be expected to deliver projects throughout the apprenticeship. Each project would involve research, knowledge and may be submitted in writing, a presentation or professional discussion.

Seminars and Qualifications:

All CVT apprentices are enrolled onto a vendor qualification called the ABTT Bronze award. This will come with training sessions - covering the following:

  • Training Session 1 - Manual Handling and Health and Safety at Work Act Develop an understanding of manual handling, injuries and the UK theatre code of conduct
  • Training Session 2 - Electrical Fundamentals To develop an understanding of basic electricity
  • Training Session 3 - Knots and Splicing Develop a basic understanding into knots commonly used in theatre
  • Training Session 4 - Fundamentals of Flying An introduction to manual flying systems within the theatre
  • Training Session 5 - Safe Use of Temporary Access Equipment Understanding safe handling of Access Equipment and covering relevant terminology
  • Training Session 6 - Revision session on ABTT Exam ABTT mock questions and covering what has previously been learnt in preparation for the exam
