Summary

Light Vehicle Service and Maintenance apprentices service and repair light vehicles such as cars up to 3.5 tonnes. You will be trained in all areas of vehicle mechanics and electronics, from engine and exhaust systems to air conditioning and security features. Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Finding and identifying mechanical faults, for example in the brakes, gears or fuel pumps
  • Checking for problems in newer vehicles with testing equipment connected to the vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU)
  • Carrying out repairs, which could include replacing damaged parts
  • Carrying out routine servicing and checks

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Training schedule

  • Our training partner will deliver a high-quality Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician programme here in our bodyshop
  • No college attendance required
  • You will work alongside a highly skilled mentor who will support you in becoming a skilled and qualified technician. It is essential to be able to follow instructions to gain an understanding of the company and vehicle manufacturer processes
  • Motor vehicle service and maintenance technician (light vehicle) (level 3)
  • Before the Standard is met, all apprentices must hold a certificate that meets the EU’s 2014 F-gas regulation

More training information

  • A full driving licence is preferred
  • There is a physical element to automotive repair, including lifting, pulling and using kinetic tools such as hammers and compressed air devices

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C or above)
  • Maths (grade 4/C or above)

About this employer

Manheim Vehicle Solutions is an evolving business, supporting customer de-fleet and handover services. This a development position designed to develop an individual to the position of a technician. This role will be in line with working with a mentor. Training will be provided that has been designed to teach and develop an individual in vehicle mechanics and electrics to gain an understanding of both aspects, this is so able to get to a level where they able to carry out most repair work. A Training programme will also be provided to gain the accreditation for an NVQ Level 3 in motor vehicle mechanics. Following this qualification, it is expected that the individual will follow a manufacturer supported development programme. Team members are responsible for ensuring all customer defined requirements are delivered, ensuring operational and customer service excellence is achieved.
