The role of a vehicle service technician is to maintain, service and repair vehicles to a consistently high standard. Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Service technicians are trained in all areas of vehicle mechanics and electronics, from engine and exhaust systems to air conditioning and security features.
The role will vary by the employer based upon the specific needs of the location, but the position typically involves:
- Developing an understanding of workshop equipment
- Advising the service receptionists about required repairs
- Producing time estimates
- Maintaining repair and service records

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
- Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
- Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
- Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
- Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
- Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
- Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
- Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
- Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
- Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
- Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
- Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
- Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Training schedule
- The programme lasts for at least 36 months (3 years) and you'll achieve a nationally recognised qualification
- You will be employed by Porsche Retail Group Ltd, and attend weeklong block training at the Calex UK Training Academy in Slough.
- Block training is complemented by a combination of regular coaching visits from one of our experienced coaches, as well as Virtual Classroom sessions and E-Learning modules
- Your development is supported through your apprenticeship journey, with your learning focused towards achieving a qualification recognised across the motor industry
- This will provide the foundation to develop your career, as there are lots of opportunities within our expanding dealer network to progress and move into new roles once you’ve successfully completed the programme
- Qualification: Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle)
- Before the Standard is met, all apprentices must hold a certificate that meets the EU’s 2014 F-gas regulation
- You will be expected to hold a full driving licence by the end of your apprenticheship

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade 4)
- Maths (grade 4)
