Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Supporting with estimates and the delivery of projects involving Measurement, estimating and budgeting of Construction projects.
Reviewing construction drawings, details, and technology.
On-site surveying, client and subcontractor meetings.
Valuations of completed work, contract reviews, negotiations and cost analysis.
Working with suppliers to evaluate material costs in anticipation of procurement.
Developing a strong understanding of Quantity Surveying principles, practices, and procedures through on-the-job learning and training.
Working within the team, you will learn to ensure projects are constructed on time, to a high standard and in accordance with the specifications.
Working with the Contracts Managers to develop an understanding of health & safety requirements and good working practices.
Support general office functions as necessary

What you'll learn

Course contents

Health and Safety: Apply health and safety issues to all activities.
Sustainability: Demonstrate application of the principles of sustainability.
Construction Technology: Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects
Contracts: Be able to apply different types of contracts to different situations.
Procurement: Assist in the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
Cost control: Assist in the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
Financial reporting: Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
Administration: Assist in the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.

Your training plan

Training is fulfilled through attending university and on-the-job training, working alongside experienced managers within the business.
It will consist of 4 days at our Harpenden office and 1 day at the University of Westminster in London - (exact day TBC).
Travel to an active site will be required at times as part of the position - sites are generally within a 30-mile radius of our office.

A Levels – BCC to BBB.
International Baccalaureate – 104 to 120 UCAS Tariff points from the IB.
BTEC Extended Diploma – DMM to DDM.
BTEC Diploma – D*D to D*D*.
Access – 104 to 120 UCAS Tariff points from the Access course.

Other requirements

The position will require working in an office and also sites. Applicants will ideally be locally based (within a 10-mile radius of Harpenden). Some travelling to sites will be necessary and to do so you will need to have a valid UK driving licence and use of your own vehicle to travel to construction sites (mileage expenses paid) to fulfil this role.

After this apprenticeship

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship and development of work skills development, you will have the opportunity to progress in your career and education with a 3-year Degree Apprenticeship to achieve the BSc Construction Quantity Surveying Level 6 qualification.
