Summary

We are looking to recruit an apprentice to join our small and welcoming team. You will work with and be guided by experienced members of our nursery family and develop your skills and understanding of working with young children.

Wage

£11,778 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

This role is term time only and therefore the advertised salary is pro-rata based on the term-time only nature of this role.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

We encourage and support all our children to become independent learners and thinkers and provide a happy and safe environment where they can develop independence, curiosity, cooperation and confidence.

The role of an Early Years Practitioner is as variable and diverse as the children we teach and care for. We expect a lot from our team but also give a lot in return. To gain as much from this apprenticeship as possible, listed below are a few of the duties we will expect from you:

You will work closely as part of a team so empathy, kindness, patience and a sense of fun is a must
When you are ready, you will undertake children’s personal care, such as helping with clothes, toileting and nappy changes
You will help set up and pack away resources and activities and actively encourage the children to participate in keeping their nursery tidy
You will support children during snack and lunch times to develop their understanding of healthy eating and help develop their social skills
You will promote a positive attitude to physical play and encourage being outside, rain or shine
You will help meet and greet the children when they arrive and understand their needs with regard to settling in strategies for individual children
You will need to take safeguarding training and be able comply and adhere to school policies with regard to safeguarding, confidentiality and behaviour
You will promote the work and image of the school and nursery by always maintaining high standards of personal appearance and adopting a friendly, professional approach to parents and carers, members of the public and the wider community
You will maintain a positive, friendly and patient attitude towards the children and staff
You will ensure that inclusion, diversity and equal opportunities are promoted and protected at all times
You will play and interact with the children to enhance and support their development, enjoyment and understanding of the world around them
You will support children to develop all of the areas of learning
You will provide children with a positive language rich environment in which to grow

You will gain an understanding of the EYFS, birth to 5 and the Characters of Effective Learning in order to be able to help plan and organise appropriate and fun activities for the children that follow their own individual interests.

Support babies and young children through a range of transitions.e.g moving onto school, moving house or the birth of a sibling
Recognise when a child is in danger, at risk of serious harm or abuse and explain the procedures to be followed to protect them. Types of abuse including: domestic, neglect , physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
Identify risks and hazards in the work setting and during off site visits.relating to both children and staff
Demonstrate skills and understanding for the prevention and control of infection, including hand washing, food preparation and hygiene, dealing with spillages safely, safe disposal of waste, using correct personal protective equipment.
Use equipment, furniture and materials safely, following the manufacturers’ instructions and setting’s requirements.
Encourage children to be aware of personal safety and the safety of others and develop personal hygiene practices (including oral hygiene).
Promote health and wellbeing in settings by encouraging babies and young children to consume healthy and balanced meals, snacks and drinks appropriate for their age and be physically active through planned and spontaneous activity throughout the day, both indoors and outdoors.
Carry out respectful care routines appropriate to the development, stage, dignity and needs of the child, including eating (feeding and weaning/complimentary feeding), nappy changing procedures, potty/toilet training, care of skin, teeth and hair and rest and sleep provision.
Communicate with all children in ways that will be understood, including verbal and non-verbal communication.
Extend children’s development and learning through verbal and non-verbal communication.
Encourage babies and young children to use a range of communication methods.

About this company

Westfield nursery is attached to Westfield Primary school and consists of 2 main rooms, Ladybird and Hedgehog. We provide play, care and education for all children from 2 years to 5 years. We are a free flow nursery and actively encourage the children to access the outside garden areas, including a small wooded area and the school fields and grounds.
