  • Annual wage

    £9,984.00

    Starting rate £6.40 / hour. This will be increased after the completion of six months probation period if the right work attitude and real interest in plants are demonstrated by the apprentice.

    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

    Mon–Fri 5–9 hrs a day between 7.30am and 8pm depending on season and needs of the business. Up to 1 hour unpaid lunch break 3-5 days a week Feb-Dec, incl day at college 1-3 days a week in Dec-Feb, incl day at college, occasional Saturdays.

What you will do in your working day

Work ranges from regular garden maintenance, advising on plant selection and suitability, creating new flower beds, monitoring the health of plants, laying lawn, to creating compost areas.

Under supervision the main responsibilities will include:

  • Weeding
  • Grass cutting
  • Strimming
  • Pruning
  • Planting
  • Mulching
  • Digging
  • Hedge trimming
  • Communicating with clients regarding their needs and requirements
  • Tool maintenance

The training you will be getting

Horticulture Level 2 (GCSE).
Typical duration: 24 months.
Standard.

Day Release at Merrist Wood.

Dedicated Performance Coach thoughout the qualification.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Support with training up to RHS Level 3 qualifications in both Certificate Practical Horticulture and Certificate in the Principles for Plant Growth, Garden Planning and Applied Propagation.

Full-time employment offer for the right candidate on completing the above qualifications and excellent work record.

Things to consider

• 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, for a level 2 course. • Passion for horticulture and related learning is essential. • Experience in customer service and outdoor roles desirable, but on the job training will be provided for the right candidate • Two character references.
